Bernardo Paranhos Velloso
Bernardo Paranhos Velloso worked in both Brazil’s bilateral and inter-American missions in Washington. In February 2016 he represented Brazil at a special meeting of the OAS Permanent Council as minister-counselor and alternate representative. 1
As chargé d’affaires at the embassy in June 2023, he intervened in the U.S. congressional debate over cattle supply chains and Amazon deforestation. In a letter entered into a Senate Finance Committee hearing, he described Brazil’s renewed environmental enforcement plans and urged cooperation. He argued that restrictions on agricultural trade could reduce producers’ income and undermine efforts to curb deforestation. 2
