Bakhtiyar Gulyamov

Bakhtiyar Gulyamov studied the history of Arab countries at Tashkent State University and worked as a military interpreter before entering Uzbekistan's diplomatic service. His early assignments included consular administration, London, and Tokyo, followed by work on political analysis and international organizations. Before Washington, he served as ambassador in Germany and then Belgium, where he also headed Uzbekistan's missions to the European Union and NATO. ¹

His American posting included a difficult presidential transition. In a later memoir, U.S. diplomat Daniel Rosenblum recalled receiving an unusual telephone call from Gulyamov on September 1, 2016. The ambassador conveyed an official account of President Islam Karimov's grave illness and the possibility of recovery. Karimov's death was announced the next day. ²

Gulyamov's preparation for this work combined language training with a master's degree in international relations from Uzbekistan's Academy on State and Social Construction. ¹
