Jerónimo Remorino

Jerónimo Remorino came to Peronism from conservative politics. A lawyer and nephew of Julio A. Roca Jr., whom he served as secretary, he helped develop the legal publishing business La Ley and directed its legislative annals. In 1945 he joined the conservative supporters of Juan Perón who broke with the opposition of the Partido Demócrata Nacional. He subsequently held administrative posts in aviation and postal savings before entering diplomacy. 1

As ambassador to the United States from 1948 to 1951, Remorino also undertook assignments connected with the Organization of American States and the United Nations. His differences with Foreign Minister Juan Atilio Bramuglia involved both policy toward Washington and personal rivalry. After Hipólito Jesús Paz's intervening ministry, Remorino became foreign minister in June 1951. 1

In a July 1951 conversation with Assistant Secretary Edward Miller, Remorino said he would continue efforts to improve relations and argue that case directly with Perón. He presented requests concerning financing for a steel mill and military equipment, and discussed Argentina's bid for the UN Economic and Social Council. 2

Remorino remained foreign minister until August 1955 and tried to mediate Perón's conflict with the Catholic Church. After the government's overthrow, he maintained contact with the exiled president, undertook political missions, and financed the Peronist newspaper Rebelión. Perón made him his personal delegate in Argentina in 1968. Remorino held that position until his death later the same year. 1
