Eduardo Amadeo
Eduardo Amadeo, born in Buenos Aires in 1947, trained as an economist at the Catholic University of Argentina and studied innovation economics at Sussex. His public service began in Buenos Aires municipal government. He became president of the National Institute of Industrial Technology in 1975, losing that office after the 1976 coup, and later chaired the Bank of the Province of Buenos Aires during the hyperinflationary years of 1987–91. Elected to Congress, he chaired its education committee. 1, 2
Social policy became another major part of his career. As national social development secretary from 1994 to 1998, he worked on systems for monitoring social programs, support for community organizations, neighborhood improvement, and assistance to older people. At the drug prevention agency, his work included developing a national statistical system for drug demand. He also founded the nonprofit Observatorio Social, which advised governments and organizations on administering social programs. 1, 2
In 2002 Amadeo served as President Eduardo Duhalde's spokesman and deputy cabinet chief before becoming ambassador to the United States. His Washington assignment centered on Argentina's recovery from the financial crisis and relations with its creditors. In January 2003 he accompanied deputy foreign minister Martín Redrado in meetings with Richard Armitage, Richard Haass, Roger Noriega, and John Maisto. They discussed market access, democratic institutions, security, and a reassessment of the policy framework associated with the Washington Consensus. 1, 3
After the embassy, Amadeo worked in the cabinet of the Mercosur presidency in 2004–05 and returned to Congress in 2009 and 2015, eventually chairing its finance committee. His books include La salida del abismo, an account of the crisis negotiations, and studies of poverty and social policy. 1
