Alexander de Bodisco

Alexander Bodisco (1786–1854) gained his early diplomatic experience in northern Europe. Working under General Peter van Suchtelen, he carried dispatches during the Napoleonic wars and news of the peace between Sweden and Denmark in 1814. He subsequently served as consul general and embassy counselor in Stockholm, then headed the mission temporarily after Suchtelen’s death. ¹

In Washington, Bodisco argued for a durable partnership with the United States even when St. Petersburg sought closer relations with Britain. He cultivated American political leaders and proposed joint Russian-American action in California, proposals his government declined. He also maintained close contact with Austrian representative Johann Georg Hülsemann during the controversies surrounding the Hungarian revolution and Lajos Kossuth’s American visit. ¹

His mission helped connect Russian development projects with American technical expertise. Bodisco negotiated the 1842 agreement bringing engineer George Washington Whistler to work on the St. Petersburg–Moscow railway and praised his experience to the Russian government. After Whistler died in 1849, railway officials again turned to Bodisco to locate a suitable American replacement. ^{2, 3}

Bodisco’s household became prominent in Washington society. In 1840 he married American Harriet Williams, who was sixteen, and their receptions brought political and diplomatic figures together. He remained minister until his death in Georgetown in 1854 and was buried at Oak Hill Cemetery. ¹
