Ahmad Salim al-Mokarrab

Ahmad Salim al-Mokarrab was born in Sharjah in 1947 and graduated from Kuwait University in philosophy and sociology in 1970. He joined the UAE foreign ministry in February 1972, shortly after federation, and began at the Beirut embassy. Rapid promotions preceded his appointment as ambassador in Tokyo in September 1974, where he remained until 1981. 1

His 1981 Washington appointment came as the UAE sought a closer military supply relationship with the United States. The American credentials briefing also addressed a possible Emirati role in representing Libyan interests and the politically disputed sale of AWACS aircraft to Saudi Arabia. In his own presentation remarks, al-Mokarrab emphasised Palestinian self determination, an end to occupation, and cooperation in economics, culture, and technology. 1

He later returned to senior work at the foreign ministry. By June 2004 he directed European, American, and Oceanian affairs, meeting Turkish and Polish representatives over bilateral relations and international security discussions. 2
