Abdul Habir

Abdul Habir was a Foreign Ministry official whose documented assignments included multilateral economic work and leadership of Indonesia's Washington embassy as chargé d'affaires in 1974. The Food and Agriculture Organization lists him among Indonesia's delegation to its ninth conference session in 1957, identifying his affiliation as the ministry in Jakarta. 1, 3

On 14 June 1974 he signed a $6.5 million development credit agreement with the International Development Association for fisheries. It provided for fishing boats, cold storage facilities, and jetties around Ambon, together with lending intended to increase fishermen's production and incomes. A World Bank photograph also places him at the signing that day of Indonesia's first tourism sector loan, a $16 million credit supporting the Nusa Dua development in Bali and training for hotel staff. 2, 3

His embassy arranged the July 1974 visit of Vice President Sultan Hamengku Buwono IX to Gerald Ford. White House preparations named Habir as the accompanying chargé and interpreter for their 15 July meeting. The subjects the Indonesian delegation intended to raise included continued development assistance, Export-Import Bank loans, and replacement aircraft. The vice presidents met as planned. Habir was appointed ambassador to Afghanistan on 27 July 1974. 4, 5
