A. E. Ritchie

Albert Edgar Ritchie moved through senior administrative and diplomatic posts in Canada’s foreign service, serving as assistant and deputy under-secretary before becoming ambassador in Washington. He subsequently led the Department of External Affairs. His papers at Library and Archives Canada include the working files of those offices, as well as material associated with Hume Wrong and Norman Robertson. 1

Ritchie continued to participate in Canadian–American negotiations after his ambassadorship. In December 1971, he joined Marcel Cadieux and Peter Towe at a ministerial meeting in Washington on trade and monetary disputes. The two governments discussed the automotive agreement, exchange rates, customs allowances, and industrial products. 2
