His appointment to Washington was his first civilian post. He cultivated relationships with Richard Nixon, Henry Kissinger, and American Jewish organizations, while retaining a direct channel to Prime Minister Golda Meir.","During the Jordan crisis of September 1970, Rabin supported Nixon's request that Israel be ready to help King Hussein against Syrian intervention. He also favored an agreement in stages with Egypt, including withdrawal from positions deep in Sinai and reopening the Suez Canal. He returned to Israel in 1973, entered the Knesset, and became prime minister the following year.","Rabin later served as defense minister and returned to the premiership in 1992. He approved the Oslo agreements with the Palestine Liberation Organization and signed the 1994 peace treaty with Jordan. He shared the 1994 Nobel Peace Prize with Shimon Peres and Yasser Arafat. On 4 November 1995, an Israeli opponent of the peace process assassinated him after a rally in Tel Aviv."],"id":"israel:yitzhak-rabin","identifiers":{},"legacyPersonIds":[],"legacyUrl":"https://chanceries.org/diplomat-86a322ae2e64c26e96cc.html","name":"Yitzhak Rabin","notes":[],"paragraphSources":[["rabin-center"],["rabin-center","rabin-jvl"],["rabin-jvl","rabin-nobel"]],"profileUrl":"diplomat-86a322ae2e64c26e96cc.html","relatedEvents":[{"basis":"named-in-story","country":"Israel","date":"1993-09-13","description":"Yitzhak Rabin and Yasser Arafat shook hands at the White House ceremony for the Israeli–Palestinian Declaration of Principles, with President Bill Clinton standing between them.","id":"oslo-1993","note":"Named people and the recorded mission tenure provide the connection; overlap does not establish personal participation.","sourceUrls":["https://www.clintonlibrary.gov/galleries/president-bill-clinton-photo-gallery"],"title":"A handshake on the South Lawn","url":"Israel.html#history-oslo-1993"}],"relatedPeople":[],"relationships":[],"researchStatus":"reviewed","reviewedOn":"2026-10-28","revision":"6abb4cf433ae307d","sources":[{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":null,"id":"rabin-center","locator":"Washington chapter","publisher":"Yitzhak Rabin Center","title":"1968 – Ambassador of Israel to the United States","type":"institutional-history","url":"https://www.rabincenter.org.il/en/years/1968/"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":null,"id":"rabin-jvl","locator":"Political career, peace agreements, assassination","publisher":"Jewish Virtual Library","title":"Yitzhak Rabin","type":"reference","url":"https://jewishvirtuallibrary.org/yitzhak-rabin"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":null,"id":"rabin-nobel","locator":"Yitzhak Rabin section","publisher":"Norwegian Nobel Institute","title":"1994 – Yasser Arafat, Shimon Peres, Yitzhak Rabin","type":"official-biography","url":"https://www.nobelpeaceprize.org/laureates/1994"},{"accessedOn":"","date":"2026-10-24","id":"mission-648454f87e3f48676b6b","locator":"Actual archived HTML downloaded and gzip-decompressed.
