He was promoted from assistant translator to translator in March 1896. That July, he left Korea with legation clerk Yi Gyo-seok to join minister Yi Beom-jin on the journey to America.","By April 1900, Yi was acting head of the legation. He reported leaks and serious deterioration in its building to the Foreign Ministry and forwarded a repair estimate from A. J. Fisher & Co. His account identified rooms and proposed work throughout the house. More than a century later, Korean heritage specialists used the surviving report to recover the legation's historic arrangement.","Yi later returned to local administration in Korea.
