His first overseas diplomatic posting was Washington, where he returned as political minister in 2012. Other assignments included public and cultural affairs in London and Beijing, Asian regional policy, the status of American forces in Japan, and the National Security Secretariat.","As senior deputy foreign minister, Yamada served as political director for Japan’s 2023 G7 presidency, supporting the Hiroshima summit and the foreign ministers’ meeting in Nagano-Karuizawa. He became ambassador to the United States in December 2023. His Washington work included congressional discussions of security challenges and outreach to state governments, Japanese businesses, and Japanese American communities. By April 2025 he reported having visited twenty-one states.","In December 2025, Yamada and U.S. Under Secretary of State Jacob Helberg signed a joint preamble to the Pax Silica declaration at a Washington reception. The initiative concerned resilient supply chains and cooperation in artificial intelligence, critical minerals, and associated technologies.
