Working with architect George Oakley Totten Jr., she pursued a diplomatic neighborhood along 15th and 16th Streets while lobbying Congress to improve its surroundings. Congress authorized Meridian Hill Park in 1910 after years of her campaigning.","Before returning to Washington, Henderson had helped establish the St. Louis School of Design and studied art at Washington University. She published Practical Cooking and Dinner Giving in 1877. In Washington, her real estate ventures accompanied proposals for a new presidential mansion and a Lincoln memorial at Meridian Hill. Those proposals failed, but she continued pressing Congress for park appropriations through her later life. She died in 1931.","At 2801 16th Street, Henderson commissioned a mansion from Totten as a memorial to her son and offered it for use by the U.S. vice president. Congress declined the gift because of upkeep costs. Spain bought the property in 1927 and used it as its ambassador's residence."],"id":"global:person-d1526cb333216c028e397639","identifiers":{},"identityScope":"global","legacyPersonIds":[],"legacyUrl":"https://chanceries.org/diplomat-187ad034a33782375389.html","name":"Mary Foote Henderson","notes":[],"paragraphSources":[["c-henderson-nps","c-henderson-park"],["c-henderson-nps"],["c-henderson-spain"]],"profileUrl":"diplomat-187ad034a33782375389.html","relatedEvents":[],"relatedPeople":[{"certainty":"documented","name":"George Oakley Totten Jr.","note":"Commissioned Totten to design the mansion at 2801 16th Street, later used by Spain.","profileUrl":"diplomat-d721a734166d82d820b1.html","sourceIds":["c-henderson-spain"],"targetId":"global:person-5ffe010c7176ba3f3d8ea3ad","type":"worked_with"}],"relationships":[{"certainty":"documented","note":"Commissioned Totten to design the mansion at 2801 16th Street, later used by Spain.","sourceIds":["c-henderson-spain"],"targetId":"global:person-5ffe010c7176ba3f3d8ea3ad","type":"worked_with"}],"researchStatus":"reviewed","reviewedOn":"2026-11-01","revision":"312d49c9ced8078c","sources":[{"accessedOn":"2026-11-01","date":"","id":"c-henderson-nps","locator":"The Henderson Fortune; Lobbyist; Meridian Hill Park; Marriage","publisher":"National Park Service","title":"Mary Foote Henderson","type":"institutional-history","url":"https://www.nps.gov/people/mary-foote-henderson.htm"},{"accessedOn":"2026-11-01","date":"","id":"c-henderson-park","locator":"Visionary and Park Champion","publisher":"National Park Service","title":"Information Panels: Creating Meridian Hill","type":"interpretive-panel","url":"https://www.nps.gov/places/000/information-panel-meridian-hill.htm"},{"accessedOn":"2026-11-01","date":"","id":"c-henderson-spain","locator":"The 16th & Fuller Mansion, paragraphs 1-3; street address in contact block","publisher":"Spain-USA Foundation","title":"The 16th & Fuller Mansion","type":"institutional-history","url":"https://www.spainusafoundation.org/"}],"topics":["Diplomatic architecture","Meridian Hill","Embassy buildings"]},"schemaVersion":1}
