Dutch authorities imprisoned and exiled him for political activity. On August 17, 1945, he and Mohammad Hatta proclaimed independence; the following day he was chosen as the republic’s first president. His formulation of Pancasila sought common principles for a state with diverse religious and regional communities.","Sukarno treated independence as part of a wider challenge to colonial rule. Indonesia helped organize the Bandung Conference in April 1955, bringing together representatives of twenty-nine Asian and African governments. The meeting connected sovereignty and racial equality with economic and cultural cooperation. It contributed to the later Non-Aligned Movement and made Indonesia a prominent participant in diplomacy among newly independent states.","From 1959, Sukarno’s Guided Democracy concentrated authority around the presidency and enlarged the military’s role in government. He sought to balance competing political forces, including the army and the Indonesian Communist Party. A contemporary American assessment described both the exclusion of some parties and emergency monetary measures against inflation. National development and political control were closely connected in the new system.","Relations with Washington alternated between engagement and confrontation. Sukarno pressed Indonesia’s claim to Dutch-controlled West New Guinea; preparations for his 1961 meeting with John Kennedy show American efforts to explore a settlement involving the United Nations. Washington also considered economic assistance. These discussions occurred alongside growing concern about the Communist Party’s influence and Indonesia’s relations with Beijing.","Sukarno opposed the formation of Malaysia, viewing it as a continuation of British influence. Confrontation brought armed incursions and fighting with British Commonwealth forces from 1963. It ended in 1966 as the political balance in Jakarta shifted against him.","The killing of senior generals by the September 30th Movement in 1965 opened a struggle in which General Suharto gained control of the army. The army and allied groups then carried out mass killings of alleged Communists and other opponents, while Sukarno’s authority collapsed. Suharto became acting president in 1967 and president in 1968. Sukarno died in Jakarta on June 21, 1970."],"id":"global:person-ce577517244d579be4d6eec7","identifiers":{},"identityScope":"global","legacyPersonIds":[],"legacyUrl":"https://chanceries.org/diplomat-e904ce242aee8f832806.html","name":"Sukarno","notes":[],"paragraphSources":[["growth-person-ce577517244d579be4d6eec7-sukarno-anri"],["growth-person-ce577517244d579be4d6eec7-sukarno-bandung","growth-person-ce577517244d579be4d6eec7-sukarno-anri"],["growth-person-ce577517244d579be4d6eec7-sukarno-guided"],["growth-person-ce577517244d579be4d6eec7-sukarno-rusk","growth-person-ce577517244d579be4d6eec7-indonesia-1965"],["growth-person-ce577517244d579be4d6eec7-sukarno-confrontation"],["growth-person-ce577517244d579be4d6eec7-indonesia-1965","growth-person-ce577517244d579be4d6eec7-suharto-anri","growth-person-ce577517244d579be4d6eec7-sukarno-anri"]],"profileUrl":"diplomat-e904ce242aee8f832806.html","relatedEvents":[],"relatedPeople":[],"relationships":[],"researchStatus":"reviewed","reviewedOn":"2026-11-04","revision":"d4ed5a4900611764","sources":[{"accessedOn":"2026-11-04","date":"","id":"growth-person-ce577517244d579be4d6eec7-sukarno-anri","inspection":{"inspectedOn":"2026-11-04","language":"id","representation":"secondary_account","scope":"Inspected Indonesian-language biography.
