From 1942, they presented musicians to mixed audiences at the Jewish Community Center and National Press Club. Their earlier gatherings at the Turkish diplomatic residence, around 1940, had brought Black performers and integrated audiences together. The brothers had first developed their interest in jazz while living in London.","Nesuhi’s later work centered on jazz records. He bought Jazz Man Records in 1946 and ran it alongside Crescent Records until 1952, before working for Good Time Jazz. In 1955, Ahmet and Jerry Wexler persuaded him to join Atlantic Records, where he became vice president responsible for jazz and the long playing record department.","At Atlantic, he produced recordings by John Coltrane, Charles Mingus, and the Modern Jazz Quartet. His responsibilities later extended to distributing music internationally. In 1971 he founded WEA International, which handled releases abroad for Atlantic, Warner Bros., Elektra, and MCA. He remained its president and chief executive until 1987."],"id":"global:person-79cfba454baecf7ad2e7d078","identifiers":{},"identityScope":"global","legacyPersonIds":[],"legacyUrl":"https://chanceries.org/diplomat-833a098a39b276e0ddb1.html","name":"Nesuhi Ertegün","notes":[],"paragraphSources":[["bc-georgetown-jazz","bc-ertegun-mfa"],["bc-nesuhi-archive"],["bc-nesuhi-archive","bc-nesuhi-rockhall"]],"profileUrl":"diplomat-833a098a39b276e0ddb1.html","relatedEvents":[],"relatedPeople":[],"relationships":[],"researchStatus":"reviewed","reviewedOn":"2026-11-01","revision":"fcacf81606e4d4c6","sources":[{"accessedOn":"2026-11-01","date":"","id":"bc-georgetown-jazz","locator":"Jazz performance at the Turkish Embassy, c. 1940; following paragraph on concerts beginning in 1942","publisher":"Georgetown University Library","title":"Rhythms of Resistance and Resilience","type":"institutional-history","url":"https://library.georgetown.edu/exhibition/rhythms-resistance-and-resilience"},{"accessedOn":"2026-11-01","date":"","id":"bc-nesuhi-archive","locator":"ARC-0014-1; biographical paragraph on Nesuhi Ertegun","publisher":"Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Library and Archives","title":"Ahmet Ertegun Papers, Series I: Correspondence, 1930s–2007","type":"archive-finding-aid","url":"https://catalog.rockhall.com/rrhof-ais/Details/archive/110055310"},{"accessedOn":"2026-11-01","date":"","id":"bc-nesuhi-rockhall","locator":"Inductee introduction","publisher":"Rock & Roll Hall of Fame","title":"Nesuhi Ertegun","type":"institutional-biography","url":"https://rockhall.com/inductees/nesuhi-ertegun/"},{"accessedOn":"2026-11-01","date":"2010-09-02","id":"bc-ertegun-mfa","locator":"Ambassador Namık Tan’s remarks, paragraphs on residence jam sessions","publisher":"Embassy of Turkey in Washington","title":"Embassy Reaffirms Ties Established by Ertegun Brothers","type":"official-retrospective","url":"https://washington-emb.mfa.gov.tr/Mission/ShowAnnouncement/118348"}],"topics":["Music","Cultural exchange","Racial integration"]},"schemaVersion":1}
