He rose to national prominence after the September 30th Movement killed six senior generals in 1965. Having defeated the movement, he consolidated control of the army and progressively displaced President Sukarno. He became acting president in March 1967 and president in March 1968.","The transition rested on mass violence. The army and allied civilian groups killed hundreds of thousands of alleged Communists and others in 1965–66 and imprisoned many more. Declassified American embassy records show that officials knew the scale and character of the campaign and supported the destruction of the Communist movement. This violence helped destroy organized opposition and established the political conditions for Suharto’s New Order.","Suharto encouraged Western investment and pursued economic stabilization and growth. His government restricted political parties and dissent, while the military retained a central role in public life. Economic development therefore proceeded within an authoritarian system. Access to state enterprises, contracts, and other opportunities enriched his family and associates, making corruption an enduring feature of his government.","Close relations with Washington reflected shared opposition to Communism and American interest in Indonesia’s regional role. During Gerald Ford and Henry Kissinger’s December 6, 1975 meeting with Suharto, he discussed possible military action in East Timor. Ford indicated that Washington would not press him over it; Kissinger raised the legal problems of using American arms and urged rapid success. Indonesian forces invaded the following day.","The occupation of East Timor brought widespread abuses, disappearances, and deaths from violence, hunger, and illness. These consequences persisted beyond the original invasion and became a major international issue. East Timor’s later truth commission documented the human losses and recommended measures to find missing people and commemorate victims.","The Asian financial crisis that began in 1997 severely damaged Indonesia’s economy and intensified discontent with Suharto’s rule. Protests and unrest preceded his resignation on May 21, 1998. Subsequent corruption proceedings against him were halted on health grounds. He died in 2008."],"id":"global:person-19bd7d8552c709b462bf1c40","identifiers":{},"identityScope":"global","legacyPersonIds":[],"legacyUrl":"https://chanceries.org/diplomat-619cd622eea90431999d.html","name":"Suharto","notes":[],"paragraphSources":[["growth-person-19bd7d8552c709b462bf1c40-suharto-anri","growth-person-19bd7d8552c709b462bf1c40-suharto-columbia","growth-person-19bd7d8552c709b462bf1c40-indonesia-1965"],["growth-person-19bd7d8552c709b462bf1c40-indonesia-1965"],["growth-person-19bd7d8552c709b462bf1c40-suharto-columbia"],["growth-person-19bd7d8552c709b462bf1c40-suharto-ford-document","growth-person-19bd7d8552c709b462bf1c40-suharto-ford-context"],["growth-person-19bd7d8552c709b462bf1c40-suharto-timor"],["growth-person-19bd7d8552c709b462bf1c40-suharto-columbia","growth-person-19bd7d8552c709b462bf1c40-suharto-anri"]],"profileUrl":"diplomat-619cd622eea90431999d.html","relatedEvents":[],"relatedPeople":[],"relationships":[],"researchStatus":"reviewed","reviewedOn":"2026-11-04","revision":"79050a71c765aea1","sources":[{"accessedOn":"2026-11-04","date":"","id":"growth-person-19bd7d8552c709b462bf1c40-suharto-anri","inspection":{"inspectedOn":"2026-11-04","language":"id","representation":"secondary_account","scope":"Inspected Indonesian-language biography.
