After his father’s death, his mother Laura Acton married Marco Minghetti. He entered diplomacy as an honorary attaché in 1871 and served in Vienna, Japan, St. Petersburg, and Constantinople before his assignment to Washington in 1880.","During the War of the Pacific, Camporeale sought American help to protect Italians in Peru. In October 1880, he reported a difficult meeting with Secretary of State William M. Evarts, who resisted further representations to Chile and stressed that American peace negotiations were already under way. Camporeale nevertheless recorded an offer of American naval assistance to Italian nationals where Italian warships were absent, and promised reciprocal help for Americans.","On February 24, 1881, Camporeale and Evarts signed a supplemental consular convention clarifying jurisdiction over disturbances aboard merchant vessels. It preserved consular authority over internal crew disputes while allowing local intervention when disturbances threatened peace ashore or involved people outside the crew. The agreement addressed recurring uncertainty in the earlier convention.","Camporeale left diplomatic service in 1882, entered the Chamber of Deputies in 1883, and became a senator in 1892. His conservative politics emphasized Sicilian agricultural interests and a Mediterranean focus for Italian foreign policy. He opposed the concentration of colonial effort in the Red Sea while favoring other imperial opportunities; his objections were strategic rather than a rejection of colonialism.","He also served as mayor of Palermo in 1900–01. His later parliamentary activity included resistance to reforms he considered threatening to conservative influence. He died in Rome in April 1918."],"id":"italy:paolo beccadelli-bologna","identifiers":{},"legacyPersonIds":[],"legacyUrl":"https://chanceries.org/diplomat-f5725181b7aa0b0fc0d4.html","name":"Paolo Beccadelli-Bologna","notes":[],"paragraphSources":[["camporeale-senate","camporeale-dbi"],["camporeale-peru"],["camporeale-convention"],["camporeale-dbi"],["camporeale-senate","camporeale-dbi"]],"profileUrl":"diplomat-f5725181b7aa0b0fc0d4.html","relatedEvents":[],"relatedPeople":[],"relationships":[],"researchStatus":"reviewed","reviewedOn":"2026-10-28","revision":"d36b42db324c2a08","sources":[{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"","id":"camporeale-senate","locator":"Dates, family, diplomatic assignments and administrative offices","publisher":"Archivio storico del Senato della Repubblica","title":"Di Camporeale Paolo: biographical and career record","type":"official-biography","url":"https://patrimonio.archivio.senato.it/repertorio-senatori-regno/senatore/IT-SEN-SEN0001-000843/di-camporeale-paolo?t=anagrafica"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"","id":"camporeale-dbi","locator":"Full biographical entry","publisher":"Dizionario Biografico degli Italiani, vol. 17 (1974)","title":"Stefano Indrio, Camporeale, Pietro Paolo Beccadelli e Acton principe di","type":"scholarship","url":"https://www.treccani.it/enciclopedia/pietro-paolo-beccadelli-e-acton-principe-di-camporeale_(Dizionario-Biografico)/"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"","id":"camporeale-peru","locator":"Second series, volume XIII, document 535, report 327, complete body","publisher":"Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, I Documenti Diplomatici Italiani","title":"Di Camporeale to Cairoli, Washington, October 14, 1880","type":"primary-record","url":"https://www.farnesina.ipzs.it/series/SECONDA%20SERIE/volumi/VOLUME%20%20XIII/full"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"","id":"camporeale-convention","locator":"pp. 831–833; all three downloaded PDF pages inspected","publisher":"United States Statutes at Large, volume 22","title":"Supplemental Convention—Italy, February 24, 1881","type":"primary-record","url":"https://www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/STATUTE-22/pdf/STATUTE-22-Pg831.pdf"},{"accessedOn":"","date":"Accessed 26 October 2026","id":"mission-aac9724cf9a1cd7fdcd9","locator":"Printed pp. 53–55 list chiefs and acting heads.
