His early activities linked technical education to trade promotion: he taught topography, helped care for engineering school collections, and represented Mexico at international exhibitions. As consul in Havana in the 1880s he proposed a permanent display of Mexican products. His later study of Belgian commercial museums examined institutions that Mexico might adapt to promote its own trade.","He returned to Cuba and became Mexico's first minister to the independent republic. Research based on his diplomatic file records his attention to shipping and trade information and his efforts to organize the Mexican community. Its institutions included a patriotic committee, a commercial studies commission, and the Sociedad Mexicana de Beneficencia, which assisted Mexicans in need. He left Havana for the Austro-Hungarian posting in 1906.","During his brief Washington ambassadorship in 1911–12, Crespo defended Mexico's position in the Chamizal boundary dispute. In a note of 9 March 1912 he maintained that the arbitration award was binding and should be implemented. Although willing to consider fresh American proposals, he rejected the idea that the award's validity itself remained open to negotiation. The dispute continued after his mission.","He returned to Vienna after Washington and remained connected with the Mexican legation during the First World War. He died there on 7 November 1917, by then without recognition from Carranza's government."],"id":"mexico:mx-gilberto-crespo-y-martinez","identifiers":{},"legacyPersonIds":[],"legacyUrl":"https://chanceries.org/diplomat-042d74c476a91360fb17.html","name":"Gilberto Crespo y Martínez","notes":[],"paragraphSources":[["crespo-engineer"],["crespo-cuba"],["crespo-chamizal"],["crespo-cuba"]],"profileUrl":"diplomat-042d74c476a91360fb17.html","relatedEvents":[],"relatedPeople":[],"relationships":[],"researchStatus":"reviewed","reviewedOn":"2026-10-28","revision":"a2a9faa4ae63607e","sources":[{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"2009","id":"crespo-engineer","locator":"2009 article, career and Belgium sections","publisher":"Secuencia / Instituto Mora","title":"Enrique Camacho Navarro, Gilberto Crespo y Martínez y su participación en la política de fomento para el México porfirista","type":"scholarship","url":"https://www.scielo.org.mx/scielo.php?pid=S0188-28722009000100006&script=sci_arttext"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"2008","id":"crespo-cuba","locator":"No.84, pp.93–120, especially 117–119","publisher":"Revista Mexicana de Política Exterior","title":"Enrique Camacho Navarro, Gilberto Crespo y Martínez, un operador de la diplomacia de México en la Cuba republicana (1902–1906)","type":"scholarship","url":"https://re.sre.gob.mx/rmpe/index.php/rmpe/article/download/779/743/788"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"1912-03-09","id":"crespo-chamizal","locator":"1913 volume, document 1251 (letter dated 1912)","publisher":"U.S. Department of State, FRUS","title":"Crespo to the Secretary of State, 9 March 1912","type":"primary-record","url":"https://history.state.gov/historicaldocuments/frus1913/d1251"},{"accessedOn":"","date":"","id":"mission-9fe6d5f27d546bc5f4ec","locator":"Official historical roster.
