Born in 1902, he became a Bengal legislator in 1937 and served as the city's deputy mayor in 1941–1942. He helped organize the Bengal Provincial Muslim League, belonged to its leadership, and supported Mohammad Ali Jinnah's campaign for Pakistan. He also presided over Calcutta's Muslim Chamber of Commerce and led a trade delegation to the Middle East.","Ispahani represented the new Pakistani state in Washington from 1947 to 1952. His work included explaining Pakistan's position on Kashmir, trade, and American assistance. In February 1951 he accepted the humanitarian case for American food aid to India but warned that it could worsen the economic dispute between the two countries. He offered Pakistani grain surpluses for sale and urged Washington to help end the trade conflict.","Military supplies were another priority. In October 1951 Ispahani and former foreign secretary Mohammad Ikramullah jointly approached the State Department to seek equipment, including tanks, shortly after Prime Minister Liaquat Ali Khan's assassination. American officials explained the competing demands created by the Korean War and other commitments.","Ispahani later served as Pakistan's minister for industries and commerce in 1954–1955. His books included The Case of Muslim India, accounts of travel in China and the Soviet Union, and a personal portrait of Jinnah published in 1967. He died in 1981."],"id":"pakistan:mirza-abul-hassan-ispahani","identifiers":{},"legacyPersonIds":[],"legacyUrl":"https://chanceries.org/diplomat-27358d5d7ea6de2636da.html","name":"Mirza Abul Hassan Ispahani","notes":[],"paragraphSources":[["ispahani-banglapedia"],["ispahani-banglapedia","ispahani-food"],["ispahani-arms"],["ispahani-banglapedia"]],"profileUrl":"diplomat-27358d5d7ea6de2636da.html","relatedEvents":[{"basis":"named-in-story","country":"Pakistan","date":"1947-08-15","description":"The United States recognized Pakistan and established diplomatic relations on 15 August 1947.
