He studied law in France and worked for a Greek commercial firm in London before entering the palace secretariat in 1875. Diplomatic appointments in Belgrade and Madrid followed. His Washington posting began in 1887.","Mavroyeni monitored Armenian political activity in the United States. In October 1893 he sent Secretary of State Walter Q. Gresham translated extracts from the New York Armenian newspaper Haik, alleging that they encouraged insurrection in the Ottoman Empire, and offered to supply further extracts regularly. Gresham acknowledged receipt but declined that continuing service.","In December 1894 Mavroyeni also transmitted the Ottoman government's account of violence near Moush, defending its actions as suppression of rebellion and forwarding a categorical denial that troops had killed unarmed women and children.","After his recall in 1896, Mavroyeni spent several years without another diplomatic appointment. He joined the Council of State, governed Samos in 1902–04, and returned to the council after resigning amid complaints about his administration. The restoration of constitutional government brought appointment to the Senate in 1908. He later served in Vienna in 1911–12, kept a diary, remained in Turkey after the establishment of the republic, and died in 1929."],"id":"turkey:mavrovani-bey","identifiers":{},"legacyPersonIds":[],"legacyUrl":"https://chanceries.org/diplomat-ba2d2687af0e8de742b4.html","name":"Mavrovani Bey","notes":[],"paragraphSources":[["tr-mavroyeni-akpinar"],["tr-mavroyeni-haik","tr-mavroyeni-gresham"],["tr-mavroyeni-1894"],["tr-mavroyeni-akpinar"]],"profileUrl":"diplomat-ba2d2687af0e8de742b4.html","relatedEvents":[],"relatedPeople":[],"relationships":[],"researchStatus":"reviewed","reviewedOn":"2026-10-28","revision":"e75eb67393d89da4","sources":[{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":null,"id":"tr-mavroyeni-akpinar","locator":"pp. 637–660; biography and Washington sections; pp. 647–654","publisher":"Genel Türk Tarihi Araştırmaları Dergisi 4/8 (2022)","title":"Mahmut Akpınar, Osmanlı Devleti’nin Hizmetinde Bir Yeni Fenerli: Aleksandır Mavroyeni Bey","type":"scholarly","url":"https://dergipark.org.tr/tr/download/article-file/2210955"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":null,"id":"tr-mavroyeni-haik","locator":"Document 674, letter and translated newspaper enclosures","publisher":"U.S. Department of State, FRUS 1893","title":"Mavroyeni Bey to Gresham, 26 October 1893","type":"primary","url":"https://history.state.gov/historicaldocuments/frus1893/d674"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":null,"id":"tr-mavroyeni-gresham","locator":"Document 675","publisher":"U.S. Department of State, FRUS 1893","title":"Gresham to Mavroyeni Bey, 2 November 1893","type":"primary","url":"https://history.state.gov/historicaldocuments/frus1893/d675"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":null,"id":"tr-mavroyeni-1894","locator":"Document 726, pp. 720–721","publisher":"U.S. Department of State, FRUS 1894","title":"Mavroyeni Bey to Gresham, 8 December 1894","type":"primary","url":"https://history.state.gov/historicaldocuments/frus1894/d726"},{"accessedOn":"","date":"Accessed 23 October 2026","id":"mission-8640388fff0b15c07ec2","locator":"Full displayed historical chronology 1867–2024; current chancery commissioned 1997, completed/used 1999, inaugurated April 23, 1999.","publisher":"","title":"Mission history and former chiefs of mission","type":"Mission record","url":"https://washington-emb.mfa.gov.tr/Mission/MissionChiefHistory"},{"accessedOn":"","date":"1895-09-09","id":"mission-4b6e072b77aae02802d9","locator":"","publisher":"","title":"FRUS 1895, part II, document 487 — Mavroyeni Bey to Olney","type":"Mission record","url":"https://history.state.gov/historicaldocuments/frus1895p2/d487"},{"accessedOn":"","date":"Accessed 26 October 2026","id":"mission-340426425ad7225dc035","locator":"","publisher":"","title":"Historical representation: Ottoman Empire","type":"Mission record","url":"https://history.state.gov/countries/turkey"}],"topics":["Ottoman diplomatic service","Armenian immigrant press","Samos","constitutional government"]},"schemaVersion":1}
