Berlin and Paris assignments preceded his service in Washington from 1890 to 1895. When Minister Saverio Fava was recalled after the New Orleans lynchings in 1891, Imperiali remained as the senior representative conducting business with the State Department.","On April 12, 1892, Imperiali notified James G. Blaine that Italy accepted the American indemnity for the victims’ families and considered diplomatic relations restored. Acting on explicit instructions from Prime Minister Antonio di Rudinì, he took charge of the legation pending Fava’s return. The agreement provided financial redress without extinguishing the possibility of judicial action by the affected families.","Later postings took Imperiali to Brussels, Berlin, Sofia, and Constantinople. As ambassador in London from 1910, he signed the secret Treaty of London on April 26, 1915, with representatives of Britain, France, and Russia. It committed Italy to enter the war within a month in exchange for territorial and other promises.","A senator from 1913, Imperiali participated in postwar diplomacy at Paris, London, and San Remo and became an Italian delegate to the League of Nations. He retired from diplomatic service in 1922 and died in Rome in 1944. The Senate preserves his extensive diaries."],"id":"italy:marquis imperiali","identifiers":{},"legacyPersonIds":[],"legacyUrl":"https://chanceries.org/diplomat-17e19809b843fe364b9a.html","name":"Marquis Imperiali","notes":[],"paragraphSources":[["imperiali-archive","imperiali-fava"],["imperiali-settlement"],["imperiali-archive","imperiali-london"],["imperiali-archive"]],"profileUrl":"diplomat-17e19809b843fe364b9a.html","relatedEvents":[],"relatedPeople":[{"certainty":"documented","name":"Saverio Fava","note":"Served under Fava and handled the restoration of relations during his absence.","profileUrl":"diplomat-075f914f03d7be5a4ddd.html","sourceIds":["imperiali-fava","imperiali-settlement"],"targetId":"italy:saverio fava","type":"worked_with"}],"relationships":[{"certainty":"documented","note":"Served under Fava and handled the restoration of relations during his absence.","sourceIds":["imperiali-fava","imperiali-settlement"],"targetId":"italy:saverio fava","type":"worked_with"}],"researchStatus":"reviewed","reviewedOn":"2026-10-28","revision":"ca5c79d1bb957527","sources":[{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"","id":"imperiali-archive","locator":"Biography, chronology and fonds description","publisher":"Archivio storico del Senato della Repubblica","title":"Guglielmo Imperiali: archival fonds and biographical chronology","type":"archive","url":"https://patrimonio.archivio.senato.it/inventario/fondi-acquisiti-dall-archivio-storico/guglielmo-imperiali"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"","id":"imperiali-fava","locator":"FRUS 1891, document 637","publisher":"U.S. Department of State, Foreign Relations of the United States","title":"Baron Fava to Mr. Blaine, March 31, 1891","type":"primary-record","url":"https://history.state.gov/historicaldocuments/frus1891/d637"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"","id":"imperiali-settlement","locator":"FRUS 1891, document 662, full note","publisher":"U.S. Department of State, Foreign Relations of the United States","title":"Marquis Imperiali to Mr. Blaine, April 12, 1892","type":"primary-record","url":"https://history.state.gov/historicaldocuments/frus1891/d662"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"","id":"imperiali-london","locator":"FRUS 1917 Supplement 2, volume I, document 416, enclosure 4, articles and signatures","publisher":"U.S. Department of State, Foreign Relations of the United States","title":"Treaty of London, April 26, 1915","type":"primary-record","url":"https://history.state.gov/historicaldocuments/frus1917Supp02v01/d416"},{"accessedOn":"","date":"","id":"mission-f44d8fa7182072fb5ce5","locator":"","publisher":"","title":"Marquis Imperiali — mission record (1891–1892)","type":"Mission record","url":"https://history.state.gov/historicaldocuments/frus1891/d661"},{"accessedOn":"","date":"Accessed 26 October 2026","id":"mission-67e5252c04637df36483","locator":"","publisher":"","title":"Historical representation: Kingdom of Italy","type":"Mission record","url":"https://www.quirinale.it/it/pagine/italian-tricolour-flag"}],"topics":["New Orleans lynching","Treaty of London","First World War","League of Nations"]},"schemaVersion":1}
