His American experience began well before his ambassadorship: he trained in the United States and served as defense and military attaché in Washington from 1977 to 1982. From 1992 to 1998 he chaired the Pakistan Ordnance Factories Board.","After retirement, Durrani participated in unofficial India–Pakistan peace talks and in a UN sponsored process involving former officials from the United States, Russia, and Iran on Afghanistan. He also served on the International Institute for Strategic Studies’ governing council. His book India and Pakistan: The Cost of Conflict and the Benefits of Peace examined the case for reducing confrontation between the two countries.","As ambassador in Washington from 2006 to 2008, Durrani faced American distrust of Pakistan’s counterterrorism policy. In a later interview, he described arranging a meeting with CIA analysts after finding that American and Pakistani assessments diverged sharply. He also dealt with disputes over Coalition Support Fund reimbursements and criticism from Congress, journalists, and policy institutes about Pakistan’s response to militant networks.","Durrani became national security adviser in 2008. Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gillani removed him in January 2009 after he publicly confirmed that the surviving Mumbai attacker, Ajmal Kasab, was Pakistani. Gillani said he had not been consulted; Durrani maintained that he had consulted President Asif Ali Zardari.","He continued advocating dialogue with India, including through the Balusa group and peace seminars. Journalist Bharat Bhushan, who knew him through those exchanges, recalled that he retained friendships across the border and used his military experience to argue for cooperation. Durrani died in Rawalpindi on 24 October 2025."],"id":"pakistan:mahmud-ali-durrani","identifiers":{},"legacyPersonIds":[],"legacyUrl":"https://chanceries.org/diplomat-5f780eeac9786622d658.html","name":"Mahmud Ali Durrani","notes":[],"paragraphSources":[["durrani-appointment","durrani-fpri"],["durrani-appointment","durrani-fpri"],["durrani-herald"],["durrani-obit","durrani-fpri"],["durrani-obit"]],"profileUrl":"diplomat-5f780eeac9786622d658.html","relatedEvents":[],"relatedPeople":[],"relationships":[],"researchStatus":"reviewed","reviewedOn":"2026-10-28","revision":"ea723e52302e3c09","sources":[{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"2006-05-13","id":"durrani-appointment","locator":"Foreign Office appointment report","publisher":"Business Recorder","title":"Mahmud Durrani made envoy to US","type":"contemporary-report","url":"https://www.brecorder.com/news/3277830"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"2017-03-27","id":"durrani-fpri","locator":"Speaker biography","publisher":"Foreign Policy Research Institute","title":"Pakistan, Its Neighbors and the US in Strategic Perspective","type":"official-biography","url":"https://www.fpri.org/multimedia/2017/03/pakistan-neighbors-us-strategic-perspective/"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"2016-07-28","id":"durrani-herald","locator":"Fahd Humayun interview; Washington questions","publisher":"Herald","title":"General perspective: Interview with Mahmud Ali Durrani","type":"primary-record","url":"https://herald.dawn.com/news/1153474"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"2025-11-19","id":"durrani-obit","locator":"Bharat Bhushan memorial; opening and Correcting stereotypes sections","publisher":"Sapan News / Global Southasia","title":"Remembering a military man who fought for peace","type":"contemporary-report","url":"https://sapannews.com/2025/11/19/remembering-a-military-man-who-fought-for-peace/"},{"accessedOn":"","date":"Accessed 25 October 2026","id":"mission-df41a370e80eb9e5f015","locator":"Charge assumption/relinquishment dates differ from nomination, arrival and credentials.
