He served at Hesse-Cassel and then in the Netherlands, where he became chargé d’affaires. His subsequent American service spanned two very different regimes: Napoleon’s empire and, after a later return to Washington, the July Monarchy.","He remained in Washington when British troops entered the city in August 1814. Living at the Octagon, he sought an assurance of protection from General Robert Ross as nearby public buildings burned. His report to Talleyrand described receiving that assurance for the French diplomatic residence. Historian George E. Pettengill cautions that private houses were generally spared, so the evidence does not establish that Sérurier alone saved the building from destruction.","According to his account, after the British departure Sérurier left Washington and offered the house he occupied to President Madison, whose official residence had been burned.","Returning as minister under Louis-Philippe, Sérurier again handled commercial disagreements. In October 1832 he renewed a claim over additional duties collected from the French ship Pactole at Pensacola, continuing a case pursued by Menou and Roux de Rochelle. His later appointments included Brussels. Elevated to the French peerage in 1837, he supported the monarchy in the upper chamber and retired from public life after the revolution of 1848."],"id":"france:louis-charles-barbe serurier","identifiers":{},"legacyPersonIds":[],"legacyUrl":"https://chanceries.org/diplomat-09475517439e9a4fc820.html","name":"Louis-Charles-Barbé Sérurier","notes":[],"paragraphSources":[["src-3e692e78c4b3b6b1"],["src-3a3f63d333b6969e"],["src-3a3f63d333b6969e"],["src-55b862eda221d354","src-3e692e78c4b3b6b1"]],"profileUrl":"diplomat-09475517439e9a4fc820.html","relatedEvents":[],"relatedPeople":[{"certainty":"documented","name":"Alphonse Pageot","note":"Brothers-in-law: Pageot was the brother of Sérurier's wife Louise;1832Washington Globe marriage notice transcribed inGHC supplement.","profileUrl":"diplomat-6f29e3aa2116b00eae60.html","sourceIds":["src-d1bc5be70908fe7c"],"targetId":"france:alphonse pageot","type":"family"}],"relationships":[{"certainty":"documented","note":"Brothers-in-law: Pageot was the brother of Sérurier's wife Louise;1832Washington Globe marriage notice transcribed inGHC supplement.","sourceIds":["src-d1bc5be70908fe7c"],"targetId":"france:alphonse pageot","type":"family"}],"researchStatus":"reviewed","reviewedOn":"2026-10-28","revision":"dd6db535ecdd466e","sources":[{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":null,"id":"src-3e692e78c4b3b6b1","locator":"Peer biography","publisher":"Sénat français","title":"Sérurier, Louis-Barbe-Charles","type":"official-biography","url":"https://www.senat.fr/pair-de-france/serurier_louis_barbe_charlespf0658.html"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"1965-02","id":"src-3a3f63d333b6969e","locator":"Printed pp51–53; PDF pp41–43","publisher":"George E.
