He worked for the Russian Telegraph Agency and as a TASS correspondent in Vienna, Rome, and Paris before joining the Foreign Commissariat in 1931. After directing press work, he became counselor at the Washington embassy in 1936 and ambassador in 1939.","His Washington assignment spanned a profound change in relations. Early in 1941, he protested American restrictions on the export of machinery already ordered by Soviet purchasing agencies and sought compensation or revised arrangements for delayed deliveries. After Germany attacked the Soviet Union, his correspondence concentrated on urgent war supplies. In July he requested additional aviation fuel and tetraethyl lead, together with tanker space to ship them, while Soviet military representatives presented further lists of requirements.","After returning to Moscow, Umansky became ambassador to Mexico in 1943. There he used cultural contacts alongside formal diplomacy, welcoming artists and writers, supporting an exhibition of wartime photographs, and promoting Shostakovich’s Seventh Symphony. He proposed that leading Mexican artists donate works for exhibition in the Soviet Union. Archival research by Katarina Lopatkina traces that initiative into the later gift program in which Frida Kahlo participated; Umansky did not live to oversee its completion.","He and his wife, Raisa, died in an aircraft crash on 25 January 1945 while traveling to present his credentials in Costa Rica, to which he had also been accredited. Their daughter Nina had been killed in Moscow in 1943."],"id":"russia:konstantin umansky","identifiers":{},"legacyPersonIds":[],"legacyUrl":"https://chanceries.org/diplomat-680e35bef28397983828.html","name":"Konstantin Umansky","notes":[],"paragraphSources":[["umansky-museum"],["umansky-machinery","umansky-fuel"],["umansky-art"],["umansky-museum"]],"profileUrl":"diplomat-680e35bef28397983828.html","relatedEvents":[],"relatedPeople":[],"relationships":[],"researchStatus":"reviewed","reviewedOn":"2026-10-28","revision":"df343486eab41a7b","sources":[{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"","id":"umansky-museum","locator":"Resident biographical entry","publisher":"House on the Embankment Museum","title":"Konstantin Alexandrovich Umansky, 1902–1945","type":"institutional-history","url":"https://dnnmuseum.gulagmemory.org/константин-александрович-уманский-1902-1945/"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"","id":"umansky-machinery","locator":"FRUS 1941, I, document 668; 8 January 1941","publisher":"U.S. Department of State, Office of the Historian","title":"Umansky’s oral statement to Sumner Welles","type":"primary-record","url":"https://history.state.gov/historicaldocuments/frus1941v01/d668"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"","id":"umansky-fuel","locator":"FRUS 1941, I, document 748; 29 July 1941","publisher":"U.S. Department of State, Office of the Historian","title":"Umansky to the Acting Secretary of State","type":"primary-record","url":"https://history.state.gov/historicaldocuments/frus1941v01/d748"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"","id":"umansky-art","locator":"2017, XVII(3), pp. 381–384","publisher":"Romanian Political Science Review","title":"Katarina Lopatkina, From Mexican Artists to the Soviet State: The Story of an Unwanted Gift","type":"scholarship","url":"https://journals.unibuc.ro/index.php/sprps/en/article/download/3523/3649/5174"},{"accessedOn":"","date":"2026-10-23","id":"mission-1abdde5085cae33211cb","locator":"","publisher":"","title":"FRUS 1942, volume III, document 367","type":"Mission record","url":"https://history.state.gov/historicaldocuments/frus1942v03/d367"},{"accessedOn":"","date":"2026-10-23","id":"mission-8f6fa2a0dec7248a7d09","locator":"","publisher":"","title":"State Department, Office of the Chief of Protocol — Russia (2007 archive)","type":"Mission record","url":"https://2001-2009.state.gov/s/cpr/94409.htm"},{"accessedOn":"","date":"Accessed 27 October 2026","id":"mission-6924f09f222c6f50391c","locator":"Welles’s memorandum records the ambassador’s questions about assistance, cargo tonnage and pending export orders after the German invasion.","publisher":"","title":"Office of the Historian — Umansky–Welles conversation, 26 June 1941","type":"Mission record","url":"https://history.state.gov/historicaldocuments/frus1941v01/d728"}],"topics":["journalism","Second World War","war supplies","Mexico","cultural diplomacy","Costa Rica"]},"schemaVersion":1}
