Born at Saint-Quentin in 1761, he studied at Louis-le-Grand and prepared for a legal career. His defense of the Constitution of 1791 helped bring him into government employment, including the Paris municipal administration and the executive’s secretariat, before his appointment as minister to the United States.","His American work involved the urgent financial needs of the revolutionary government. A March 1794 memorandum by Edmund Randolph records Fauchet pressing for a million dollar installment on the American debt to France. Randolph questioned the practicality of the request, while Fauchet argued that even that sum would not meet France’s requirements.","Fauchet’s confidential dispatches later became evidence in the campaign against Randolph. After British interception, a letter reached British minister George Hammond and then members of Washington’s cabinet. Washington explained this route to Randolph on 20 August 1795, following his resignation. Federalists interpreted the dispatch as evidence of corruption; the State Department’s historical assessment rejects the charge.","Under Napoleon, Fauchet became prefect successively of the Var, Gironde, and Arno, and served in the administration of Elisa Baciocchi in Tuscany. He returned to the Gironde prefecture during the Hundred Days and represented the Var in the 1815 Chamber of Representatives. After the second Bourbon Restoration, he withdrew from public employment. He died in Paris in 1834."],"id":"france:joseph fauchet","identifiers":{},"legacyPersonIds":[],"legacyUrl":"https://chanceries.org/diplomat-aa183b224ebdcdda8994.html","name":"Joseph Fauchet","notes":[],"paragraphSources":[["src-5b4db65805eb6c4c"],["src-ce5e25b3bd41bc9c"],["src-8ee8ea130c82e823","src-fc2e48926d4caf10"],["src-5b4db65805eb6c4c","src-d9a63cf09b294410"]],"profileUrl":"diplomat-aa183b224ebdcdda8994.html","relatedEvents":[],"relatedPeople":[],"relationships":[],"researchStatus":"reviewed","reviewedOn":"2026-10-28","revision":"334a394a71a50e5c","sources":[{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":null,"id":"src-5b4db65805eb6c4c","locator":"Robert and Cougny biography","publisher":"Assemblée nationale, Sycomore","title":"Jean Antoine Joseph Fauchet","type":"reference","url":"https://www2.assemblee-nationale.fr/sycomore/fiche/16213"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"1794-03-13","id":"src-ce5e25b3bd41bc9c","locator":"Institutional abstract of Randolph memorandum, document 1794031340000","publisher":"Papers of the War Department, Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media","title":"Payments of the French debt","type":"archive","url":"https://wardepartmentpapers.org/document/46133/"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"1795-08-20","id":"src-8ee8ea130c82e823","locator":"Series 2, letterbook 19, transcription PDF pp. 67–68","publisher":"Library of Congress, George Washington Papers","title":"George Washington to Edmund Randolph, 20 August 1795","type":"primary-record","url":"https://tile.loc.gov/storage-services/service/mss/mgw/mgw2/019/019.pdf"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":null,"id":"src-fc2e48926d4caf10","locator":"Influence on U.S. Diplomacy, Fauchet dispatch and resignation","publisher":"United States Department of State, Office of the Historian","title":"Edmund Jennings Randolph: Biographies of the Secretaries of State","type":"institutional-history","url":"https://history.state.gov/departmenthistory/people/randolph-edmund-jennings"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":null,"id":"src-d9a63cf09b294410","locator":"Authority cb11902317w, career and variant names","publisher":"Bibliothèque nationale de France","title":"Fauchet, Joseph (1761–1834)","type":"archive","url":"https://catalogue.bnf.fr/ark%3A/12148/cb11902317w"},{"accessedOn":"","date":"","id":"mission-a79af9b5a3368919ffeb","locator":"","publisher":"","title":"Joseph Fauchet — mission record (1794–1795)","type":"Mission record","url":"https://archivesdiplomatiques.diplomatie.gouv.fr/media/ddd06cdd-10ce-445c-8f53-cd91896b1b27.pdf"},{"accessedOn":"","date":"","id":"mission-1fa8912d8820b072e8e4","locator":"","publisher":"","title":"Joseph Fauchet — mission record (1794–1795)","type":"Mission record","url":"https://www.mountvernon.org/library/digitalhistory/digital-encyclopedia/article/george-hammond"},{"accessedOn":"","date":"","id":"mission-824ee0918ce4643cfb45","locator":"","publisher":"","title":"Joseph Fauchet — mission record (1794–1795)","type":"Mission record","url":"https://wellcomecollection.org/works/scgnvvhc"}],"topics":["French Revolution","American debt to France","Randolph affair","prefectural administration"]},"schemaVersion":1}
