Born in Paris in 1769, he entered diplomacy at Stuttgart and Copenhagen, worked in the ministry’s political division, and became minister at Dresden, Stuttgart, and Naples. His Naples mission ended during the collapse of Napoleon’s alliance with Joachim Murat in 1814. He subsequently represented Épernay during the Hundred Days and became a councillor of state.","After representing France in the Netherlands, he was sent to Washington. In March 1827, Mareuil protested duties levied at Savannah on the Ville du Havre, Sully, and Eugénie, which had carried French produce through Martinique. He argued that touching a French colonial port should not remove the protection of the 1822 commercial convention. Clay replied that President John Quincy Adams agreed: the duties would be refunded and customs officers instructed against repeating the charge.","His later assignments included Portugal and temporary leadership of the London embassy during Talleyrand’s absence, when he signed protocols concerning Belgium. Appointed a peer in 1832, he again became ambassador to Naples before retiring to Champagne. He died in 1855. The French diplomatic archives preserve his official and family correspondence and memoirs written in 1819 and 1838, alongside papers of his diplomat son Jean-Joseph."],"id":"france:joseph-alexandre-jacques durant de mareuil","identifiers":{},"legacyPersonIds":[],"legacyUrl":"https://chanceries.org/diplomat-dedc94478c4eaa55a295.html","name":"Joseph-Alexandre-Jacques Durant de Mareuil","notes":[],"paragraphSources":[["src-ac348d33dcf7b07e"],["src-a97f5d45bbfd5d9a"],["src-ac348d33dcf7b07e","src-mareuil-archive"]],"profileUrl":"diplomat-dedc94478c4eaa55a295.html","relatedEvents":[{"basis":"reviewed-context","country":"France","date":"1824-12-10","description":"The aging French hero of the American Revolution addresses the House of Representatives during his celebrated return to the United States, renewing a friendship forged in war.","id":"france-lafayette","note":"Durant de Mareuil’s recorded 1824–1830 posting provides context for the tour year; exact 1824 boundaries and personal involvement are not established.","sourceUrls":["https://blogs.loc.gov/law/2024/12/200th-anniversary-of-the-marquis-de-lafayettes-address-to-congress/"],"title":"Lafayette returns to Congress","url":"France.html#history-france-lafayette"}],"relatedPeople":[],"relationships":[],"researchStatus":"reviewed","reviewedOn":"2026-10-28","revision":"a9c76ef828f41385","sources":[{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":null,"id":"src-ac348d33dcf7b07e","locator":"Robert and Cougny parliamentary biography","publisher":"Assemblée nationale, Sycomore","title":"Joseph-Alexandre-Jacques Durant de Mareuil","type":"reference","url":"https://www2.assemblee-nationale.fr/sycomore/fiche?num_dept=16525"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"1828-04-08","id":"src-a97f5d45bbfd5d9a","locator":"20th Congress, 1st session, document 240, pp. 11–13, letters of 13 and 20 March 1827","publisher":"United States House of Representatives / GovInfo","title":"Martinique and Guadaloupe: documents accompanying Senate bill 122","type":"primary-record","url":"https://www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/SERIALSET-00174_00_00-018-0240-0000/pdf/SERIALSET-00174_00_00-018-0240-0000.pdf"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":null,"id":"src-mareuil-archive","locator":"442PAAP, biography and presentation of contents","publisher":"Archives diplomatiques","title":"Durant de Mareuil, Joseph-Alexandre-Jacques et Jean-Joseph","type":"archive","url":"https://archivesdiplomatiques.diplomatie.gouv.fr/ark:/14366/xfb7wnlrhmq8"},{"accessedOn":"","date":"","id":"mission-a79af9b5a3368919ffeb","locator":"","publisher":"","title":"Joseph-Alexandre-Jacques Durant de Mareuil — mission record (1824–1830)","type":"Mission record","url":"https://archivesdiplomatiques.diplomatie.gouv.fr/media/ddd06cdd-10ce-445c-8f53-cd91896b1b27.pdf"},{"accessedOn":"","date":"","id":"mission-27b251055060fa2612dc","locator":"","publisher":"","title":"Joseph-Alexandre-Jacques Durant de Mareuil — mission record (1824–1830)","type":"Mission record","url":"https://archivesdiplomatiques.diplomatie.gouv.fr/media/aff96ac0-1c2e-4f0c-9e9d-c736bfa7eafe.pdf"},{"accessedOn":"","date":"","id":"mission-c0011cfd13b371e1d0f8","locator":"","publisher":"","title":"Joseph-Alexandre-Jacques Durant de Mareuil — mission record (1824–1830)","type":"Mission record","url":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ambassadors_of_France_to_the_United_States"},{"accessedOn":"","date":"Accessed 26 October 2026","id":"mission-4f192e1ef70db17feecb","locator":"","publisher":"","title":"Historical representation: Kingdom of France","type":"Mission record","url":"https://www.elysee.fr/en/french-presidency/the-french-flag"}],"topics":["commercial convention of 1822","colonial trade","Napoleonic diplomacy","Belgian independence"]},"schemaVersion":1}
