He entered the diplomatic service in January 1869 as an attaché in Bolivia, then moved through Paraguay and Uruguay. In the 1870s he repeatedly took charge of missions during senior officers’ absences. He headed the Venezuelan mission from 1877 to 1881 before becoming a secretary in Washington, where he also served as acting head.","Valente became minister resident in Bolivia in 1885 and was promoted to minister plenipotentiary in Washington in January 1889. That July he was selected for the special mission to negotiate a commercial treaty and represent Brazil at the International American Conference. After the overthrow of the Brazilian monarchy, he continued dealing with the United States on behalf of the new government. In November he conveyed assurances concerning the change of regime and the confirmation of his own and Salvador de Mendonça’s powers, while noting that Lafayette Rodrigues Pereira had declined renewed authority.","He was transferred to Austria-Hungary in December 1890. In May 1893 the Brazilian Senate considered his nomination, together with the Baron of Ladário, for a special embassy to China. He died in Vienna on 3 June 1893 while serving as Brazil’s minister there."],"id":"brazil:jose gurgel do amaral valente","identifiers":{},"legacyPersonIds":[],"legacyUrl":"https://chanceries.org/diplomat-a06672e65eb85beceabe.html","name":"José Gurgel do Amaral Valente","notes":[{"sourceIds":["mission-62664b5e08dd6454fab5","mission-759fca5789687b8b2893","mission-4a7db01ca9376d919aaa","mission-fc4375c1c92978eed672"],"text":"FUNAG’s 2021 chronology dates the special mission to 30 September–18 December 1889; its earlier guide gives 10 November 1889–21 January 1891."},{"sourceIds":["mission-62664b5e08dd6454fab5","mission-759fca5789687b8b2893","mission-4a7db01ca9376d919aaa","mission-fc4375c1c92978eed672"],"text":"FUNAG’s 2021 chronology dates this posting to 21 July 1883–13 June 1885; its earlier guide gives 15 August 1883–8 December 1885."}],"paragraphSources":[["studart123"],["studart124","republic"],["studart123","studart124","senate1893"]],"profileUrl":"diplomat-a06672e65eb85beceabe.html","relatedEvents":[],"relatedPeople":[{"certainty":"documented","name":"Salvador Furtado de Mendonça Drummond","note":"Both were retained as Brazilian delegates to the International American Conference after the republic was proclaimed.","profileUrl":"diplomat-5feb44e296234de86008.html","sourceIds":["republic"],"targetId":"brazil:salvador furtado de mendonca drummond","type":"worked_with"}],"relationships":[{"certainty":"documented","note":"Both were retained as Brazilian delegates to the International American Conference after the republic was proclaimed.","sourceIds":["republic"],"targetId":"brazil:salvador furtado de mendonca drummond","type":"worked_with"}],"researchStatus":"reviewed","reviewedOn":"2026-10-28","revision":"f054cfdd067a7d22","sources":[{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"1889-11-23","id":"republic","locator":"frus1889; document d47","publisher":"U.S. Department of State","title":"Valente to Blaine, 23 November 1889","type":"primary-record","url":"https://history.state.gov/historicaldocuments/frus1889/d47"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"1913","id":"studart123","locator":"Printed p. 123; scan leaf 135","publisher":"Typographia Minerva; public-domain scan/OCR on Wikisource","title":"Guilherme Studart, Diccionario bio-bibliographico cearense, volume II: José Gurgel do Amaral Valente","type":"reference","url":"https://pt.wikisource.org/wiki/P%C3%A1gina:Diccionario_bio-bibliographico_cearense_-_volume_segundo.djvu/135?action=edit&redlink=1"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"1913","id":"studart124","locator":"Printed p. 124; scan leaf 136","publisher":"Typographia Minerva; public-domain scan/OCR on Wikisource","title":"Guilherme Studart, Diccionario bio-bibliographico cearense, volume II: José Gurgel do Amaral Valente","type":"reference","url":"https://pt.wikisource.org/wiki/P%C3%A1gina:Diccionario_bio-bibliographico_cearense_-_volume_segundo.djvu/136?action=edit&redlink=1"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"1893","id":"senate1893","locator":"Historical index p. 34; presidential message 12 May, read 16 May 1893","publisher":"Senado Federal","title":"Annaes do Senado Federal, 1893: special embassy to China","type":"primary-record","url":"https://www.senado.leg.br/publicacoes/anais/pdf-digitalizado/Anais_Republica/1893/1893%20Hist%C3%B3rico.pdf"},{"accessedOn":"","date":"Accessed 22 October 2026","id":"mission-62664b5e08dd6454fab5","locator":"Barbosa’s own account of embassy support for Projeto Resgate.","publisher":"","title":"Rubens Barbosa: archival-recovery initiative, foreword pp. 30–31","type":"Mission record","url":"https://funag.gov.br/loja/download/753-guia_dos_arquivos_americanos.pdf"},{"accessedOn":"","date":"Accessed 26 October 2026","id":"mission-759fca5789687b8b2893","locator":"","publisher":"","title":"Historical representation: Empire of Brazil","type":"Mission record","url":"https://funag.gov.br/loja/download/legacoes_embaixadas.pdf"},{"accessedOn":"","date":"","id":"mission-4a7db01ca9376d919aaa","locator":"","publisher":"","title":"José Gurgel do Amaral Valente — mission record (1889)","type":"Mission record","url":"https://funag.gov.br/biblioteca-nova/produto/loc_pdf/345/1/monarquia_e_a_republica:_aspectos_das_relacoes_entre_brasil_e_estados_unidos_durante_o_imperio_a"},{"accessedOn":"","date":"Accessed 26 October 2026","id":"mission-fc4375c1c92978eed672","locator":"","publisher":"","title":"Historical representation: Empire of Brazil","type":"Mission record","url":"https://www.camara.leg.br/noticias/91674-saiba-quais-sao-as-12-bandeiras-historicas-do-brasil/"}],"topics":["recognition of the republic","International American Conference"]},"schemaVersion":1}
