He joined Tel Aviv University's faculty in 1971 and went on to direct the Dayan Center, lead the humanities faculty, and serve as rector. His scholarship on Syrian politics brought him into diplomacy when Yitzhak Rabin selected him as chief negotiator with Syria in 1992 and subsequently as ambassador to the United States.","Rabinovich initially traveled repeatedly to Washington for the negotiations before taking up residence as ambassador in 1993. He maintained a close working relationship with Rabin as the government explored a settlement with Hafez al-Assad. In a later interview, he described the difficulty of reconciling territorial withdrawal, security arrangements, and the nature of a future peace. After Rabin's assassination, Shimon Peres kept him as ambassador but transferred leadership of the Syrian negotiations to Uri Savir. Rabinovich remained on the team until he resigned after Netanyahu's 1996 election victory.","He returned to university leadership as president of Tel Aviv University from 1999 to 2007. His subsequent books included a biography of Rabin, studies of the Arab–Israeli conflict, and Syrian Requiem, written with Carmit Valensi. He also helped lead the Israel Institute, the Dan David Foundation, and research institutions concerned with Middle Eastern history and policy."],"id":"israel:itamar-rabinovich","identifiers":{},"legacyPersonIds":[],"legacyUrl":"https://chanceries.org/diplomat-2f94c59b3f7669194c36.html","name":"Itamar Rabinovich","notes":[],"paragraphSources":[["rabinovich-about","rabinovich-brookings"],["rabinovich-interview"],["rabinovich-about","rabinovich-brookings"]],"profileUrl":"diplomat-2f94c59b3f7669194c36.html","relatedEvents":[{"basis":"tenure-overlap","country":"Israel","date":"1993-09-13","description":"Yitzhak Rabin and Yasser Arafat shook hands at the White House ceremony for the Israeli–Palestinian Declaration of Principles, with President Bill Clinton standing between them.","id":"oslo-1993","note":"Named people and the recorded mission tenure provide the connection; overlap does not establish personal participation.","sourceUrls":["https://www.clintonlibrary.gov/galleries/president-bill-clinton-photo-gallery"],"title":"A handshake on the South Lawn","url":"Israel.html#history-oslo-1993"}],"relatedPeople":[{"certainty":"documented","name":"Yitzhak Rabin","note":"Rabin appointed Rabinovich chief negotiator with Syria and Washington ambassador; direct recollection describes close working relationship.","profileUrl":"diplomat-86a322ae2e64c26e96cc.html","sourceIds":["rabinovich-interview"],"targetId":"israel:yitzhak-rabin","type":"served_under"}],"relationships":[{"certainty":"documented","note":"Rabin appointed Rabinovich chief negotiator with Syria and Washington ambassador; direct recollection describes close working relationship.","sourceIds":["rabinovich-interview"],"targetId":"israel:yitzhak-rabin","type":"served_under"}],"researchStatus":"reviewed","reviewedOn":"2026-10-28","revision":"3510c27918c52099","sources":[{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":null,"id":"rabinovich-about","locator":"Career biography and bibliography","publisher":"Itamar Rabinovich / Tel Aviv University","title":"About Itamar Rabinovich","type":"official-biography","url":"https://www.itamarrabinovich.com/about"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":null,"id":"rabinovich-brookings","locator":"Expert biography","publisher":"Brookings Institution","title":"Itamar Rabinovich","type":"official-biography","url":"https://www.brookings.edu/people/itamar-rabinovich/"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"2022-05-24","id":"rabinovich-interview","locator":"Syria discussion; Israel Affairs25(4),2019,pp.699–725","publisher":"Israel Affairs interview reproduced by Itamar Rabinovich","title":"Keys for peace in the Middle East: interview with Ambassador Itamar Rabinovich","type":"primary-record","url":"https://www.itamarrabinovich.com/post/keys-for-peace-in-the-middle-east-interview-with-ambassador-itamar-rabinovich"},{"accessedOn":"","date":"2026-10-24","id":"mission-648454f87e3f48676b6b","locator":"Actual archived HTML downloaded and gzip-decompressed.
