His teacher Tahir Paşa encouraged his mathematical ability, and he became an instructor in subjects ranging from algebra and geometry to mechanics and astronomy. Military work took him to France to study weapons production, where he also continued his mathematical studies.","His first extended American assignment concerned Ottoman arms purchases. In the 1870s he inspected rifles and worked on the technical and contractual problems surrounding orders placed with American manufacturers. He also addressed the Rhode Island Historical Society on Islam in February 1878 and was elected a member that April. During this period he began the mathematical work that became his book Linear Algebra.","He returned to the United States as minister in 1883, arriving in New York on 30 April before going to Washington to meet President Chester A. Arthur. A May report shows him still handling rifles and ammunition, investigating a proposed paper factory, and considering how to answer hostile American press coverage. His scientific interests continued alongside these duties: a surviving February 1885 note records his sending a copy of Linear Algebra to Harvard librarian Justin Winsor at mathematician J. M. Peirce’s request.","Published in English in 1882 and enlarged in 1892, Linear Algebra developed operations on directed lines and applied them to geometry. Historian of mathematics Gert Schubring identifies Argand’s treatment of complex quantities as an important inspiration and distinguishes Tevfik’s approach from Hamilton’s quaternions. Its title is an early use of a now familiar term, but its contents should not be equated with the whole modern discipline bearing that name.","At home, Tevfik held senior military inspection, finance, commerce, and public works posts. He was also a founder of the educational society that supported Darüşşafaka and contributed to its scientific journal. He died in 1901."],"id":"turkey:huseyin-tevfik-pasa","identifiers":{},"legacyPersonIds":[],"legacyUrl":"https://chanceries.org/diplomat-695fcceb5c0eec3fcf4a.html","name":"Hüseyin Tevfik Paşa","notes":[],"paragraphSources":[["tevfik-cecen"],["tevfik-polat"],["tevfik-polat"],["tevfik-schubring"],["tevfik-cecen"]],"profileUrl":"diplomat-695fcceb5c0eec3fcf4a.html","relatedEvents":[],"relatedPeople":[],"relationships":[],"researchStatus":"reviewed","reviewedOn":"2026-10-28","revision":"8b84abc7bf4a4cdf","sources":[{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":null,"id":"tevfik-cecen","locator":"Full career entry: education, ministries, educational society and death","publisher":"TDV İslâm Ansiklopedisi (1999)","title":"Kâzım Çeçen, Hüseyin Tevfik Paşa","type":"biographical-reference","url":"https://islamansiklopedisi.org.tr/huseyin-tevfik-pasa"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":null,"id":"tevfik-polat","locator":"Printed pp. 25–28: first American stay, Washington appointment, May 1883 report and Harvard note","publisher":"Osmanlı Bilimi Araştırmaları 20/1 (2019), pp. 16–46","title":"Atilla Polat, Son Dönem Osmanlı Matematikçi-Bürokratı Vidinli Hüseyin Tevfik Paşa’nın Hayatı","type":"scholarly-article","url":"https://cdn.istanbul.edu.tr/file/JTA6CLJ8T5/1C7126F5EF0E461CA8944753E0BB8BC0"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":null,"id":"tevfik-schubring","locator":"Printed pp. 43–46: terminology, Argand, vector operations and applications","publisher":"Osmanlı Bilimi Araştırmaları 8/2 (2007), pp. 43–48","title":"Gert Schubring, Hüseyin Tevfik Pasha—The Inventor of ‘Linear Algebra’","type":"scholarly-article","url":"https://makale.isam.org.tr/bitstreams/8215c7c9-3052-4a01-84ac-520343895276/download"},{"accessedOn":"","date":"Accessed 23 October 2026","id":"mission-8640388fff0b15c07ec2","locator":"Full displayed historical chronology 1867–2024; current chancery commissioned 1997, completed/used 1999, inaugurated April 23, 1999.","publisher":"","title":"Mission history and former chiefs of mission","type":"Mission record","url":"https://washington-emb.mfa.gov.tr/Mission/MissionChiefHistory"},{"accessedOn":"","date":"1884-04-26","id":"mission-722b3e430cb6b5615d99","locator":"","publisher":"","title":"FRUS 1885, document 678 — Tevfik Pasha to Frelinghuysen","type":"Mission record","url":"https://history.state.gov/historicaldocuments/frus1885/d678"},{"accessedOn":"","date":"1884-08-30","id":"mission-87a9abfb6729a8a1236b","locator":"","publisher":"","title":"FRUS 1885, document 680 — Tevfik Pasha to Frelinghuysen","type":"Mission record","url":"https://history.state.gov/historicaldocuments/frus1885/d680"},{"accessedOn":"","date":"","id":"mission-15b8cee79b35918dcbcf","locator":"","publisher":"","title":"FRUS 1890, document 454 — reference to Tevfik as former minister at Washington","type":"Mission record","url":"https://history.state.gov/historicaldocuments/frus1890/d454"},{"accessedOn":"","date":"Accessed 26 October 2026","id":"mission-340426425ad7225dc035","locator":"","publisher":"","title":"Historical representation: Ottoman Empire","type":"Mission record","url":"https://history.state.gov/countries/turkey"}],"topics":["mathematics","military procurement","Darüşşafaka","science education"]},"schemaVersion":1}
