He served at the Washington embassy and acted as chargé d’affaires during the 1920s. His later appointments took him to Chile, Argentina, and Spain. He married Katharine O’Brien, a daughter of the American diplomat Thomas J. O’Brien.","In 1923 Chilton negotiated practical cooperation against the international drug trade. Britain instructed consular officers to pass information about suspected traffickers to American customs officials, and Secretary of State Charles Evans Hughes agreed to reciprocal exchanges. Chilton subsequently explained how officials throughout the British Empire could receive such reports and proposed sharing useful information with the League of Nations. Hughes accepted that additional cooperation in December.","His Washington work also included implementation of naval disarmament. In March 1925, signing for Ambassador Esmé Howard, Chilton informed the State Department that Britain had completed the scrapping of capital ships required by the Washington naval treaty. His note specified exceptions for the training ship Colossus, made incapable of combat service, and the target ship Agamemnon. He became ambassador to Chile in 1930 and, after serving in Argentina, received his appointment to Spain in October 1935.","The Spanish Civil War made Chilton’s political sympathies consequential. Working from Saint-Jean-de-Luz in France, he maintained close contact with Franco’s supporters across the border. Historian Paul Preston argues that his hostility to the Spanish Republic distorted British assessments. During the 1937 Basque campaign, Chilton relayed insurgent claims that Bilbao was effectively blockaded and warned that British merchant ships could not safely continue supplying the port. These reports and threats from the insurgent commander Julián Troncoso helped shape London’s decision to advise merchant ships to stay away. Chilton retired later that year."],"id":"united-kingdom:henry getty chilton","identifiers":{},"legacyPersonIds":[],"legacyUrl":"https://chanceries.org/diplomat-b69f33c3a1f56d359e6e.html","name":"Henry Getty Chilton","notes":[],"paragraphSources":[["src-c1cabd3bd888542c","src-126e96109face90c"],["src-644cdb6034201c93"],["src-95bfe88778ad3c6c","src-b972183fa286e4e1","src-038f84f20f5249c4","src-126e96109face90c"],["src-4219015bcd2dd3fc","src-203c612b72442bbb"]],"profileUrl":"diplomat-b69f33c3a1f56d359e6e.html","relatedEvents":[],"relatedPeople":[],"relationships":[],"researchStatus":"reviewed","reviewedOn":"2026-10-28","revision":"3145e1d7bed19b24","sources":[{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"1902-04-18","id":"src-c1cabd3bd888542c","locator":"p. 2605, Foreign Office limited competition","publisher":"The London Gazette","title":"Civil Service examination: Henry Getty Chilton","type":"primary-record","url":"https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/27426/page/2605/data.pdf"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":null,"id":"src-126e96109face90c","locator":"Person 393920","publisher":"ThePeerage","title":"Sir Henry Getty Chilton","type":"reference","url":"https://www.thepeerage.com/p39392.htm"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":null,"id":"src-644cdb6034201c93","locator":"Printed pp. 410–414; 1923 narcotics information agreement; PDF pp. 424–428 inspected","publisher":"US Department of State","title":"Charles I.
