In May 1828, after the conclusion of a new commerce and navigation treaty, he pressed Secretary of State Henry Clay to reimburse discriminatory shipping duties collected from Prussian vessels. Prussia had already extended equal treatment to American ships, and Niederstetter argued that reciprocity should cover the earlier payments as well.","His correspondence also connected American and European scholarly circles. Writing from Philadelphia in June 1828, he sent Wilhelm von Humboldt a publication by the traveler Carlo Vidua. Niederstetter recalled meeting Vidua during a joint journey through the northern United States in 1825 and offered Humboldt material gathered during Vidua’s travels."],"id":"germany:germany-ludwig-niederstetter","identifiers":{},"legacyPersonIds":[],"legacyUrl":"https://chanceries.org/diplomat-039f8a6eb35328e3a3e2.html","name":"Ludwig Niederstetter","notes":[],"paragraphSources":[["niederstetter-commerce"],["niederstetter-humboldt"]],"profileUrl":"diplomat-039f8a6eb35328e3a3e2.html","relatedEvents":[],"relatedPeople":[],"relationships":[],"researchStatus":"reviewed","reviewedOn":"2026-10-28","revision":"fbe3a7848685e80d","sources":[{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"1828-05-16","id":"niederstetter-commerce","locator":"Printed pp. 3–6; Niederstetter to Clay, 9 May 1828","publisher":"United States Congress / GovInfo","title":"Commercial regulations with Prussia, presidential message and correspondence","type":"primary-record","url":"https://www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/SERIALSET-00167_00_00-026-0196-0000/pdf/SERIALSET-00167_00_00-026-0196-0000.pdf"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"1828-06-10","id":"niederstetter-humboldt","locator":"Letter 435; manuscript Coll. ling. fol. 52, fols. 137–139","publisher":"Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities","title":"Ludwig Niederstetter an Wilhelm von Humboldt, 10.06.1828","type":"primary-record","url":"https://wvh-briefe.bbaw.de/435"},{"accessedOn":"","date":"Accessed 23 October 2026","id":"mission-4004483e27002a3fc55a","locator":"Secondary year level roster; exact credentials and all temporary acting appointments not fully audited.","publisher":"","title":"Incoming German ambassadors to the United States: secondary chronology","type":"Mission record","url":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ambassadors_of_Germany_to_the_United_States"},{"accessedOn":"","date":"Accessed 26 October 2026","id":"mission-2403d1faa9fad56b36b8","locator":"","publisher":"","title":"Historical representation: Prussia","type":"Mission record","url":"https://www.bundestag.de/en/parliament/symbols/flag/flag-199494"},{"accessedOn":"","date":"Accessed 23 October 2026","id":"mission-83913b668e6ddcdcd669","locator":"","publisher":"","title":"U.S. Department of State, Office of the Historian: Germany recognition and diplomatic relations","type":"Mission record","url":"https://history.state.gov/countries/germany"}],"topics":["commercial diplomacy","shipping","scholarly exchange"]},"schemaVersion":1}
