His early diplomatic assignments included St. Petersburg, where he worked under Otto von Bismarck, and Rome. As the North German Confederation’s representative in Mexico, he negotiated a commercial treaty despite Mexican distrust of European governments after the French intervention.","Sent to Washington in 1871, Schlözer cultivated relations with German Americans and became a friend of Carl Schurz. At Bismarck’s request, he investigated American religious affairs, especially the position of the Catholic Church. That experience became useful when Bismarck asked him to sound out the Vatican about easing the Kulturkampf.","Schlözer undertook preliminary discussions in Rome in 1881 and became Prussian minister to the Holy See the following year. He helped negotiate the restoration of relations between the Prussian government and the papacy. He retired in 1892 and died in Berlin in 1894."],"id":"germany:germany-kurd-von-schlozer","identifiers":{"gnd":"118795147"},"legacyPersonIds":[],"legacyUrl":"https://chanceries.org/diplomat-4995bcd2957680232433.html","name":"Kurd von Schlözer","notes":[],"paragraphSources":[["schlozer-adb"],["schlozer-adb"],["schlozer-adb"]],"profileUrl":"diplomat-4995bcd2957680232433.html","relatedEvents":[],"relatedPeople":[],"relationships":[],"researchStatus":"reviewed","reviewedOn":"2026-10-28","revision":"ce66e02999572e85","sources":[{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"1908","id":"schlozer-adb","locator":"Paul Curtius, biographical article; Washington and Vatican sections","publisher":"Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie / Bavarian Academy of Sciences","title":"Schlözer, Kurd von","type":"scholarship","url":"https://www.deutsche-biographie.de/sfz10828.html"},{"accessedOn":"","date":"Accessed 23 October 2026","id":"mission-4004483e27002a3fc55a","locator":"Secondary year level roster; exact credentials and all temporary acting appointments not fully audited.","publisher":"","title":"Incoming German ambassadors to the United States: secondary chronology","type":"Mission record","url":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ambassadors_of_Germany_to_the_United_States"},{"accessedOn":"","date":"Accessed 23 October 2026","id":"mission-c0c20ca52593a9b208d8","locator":"","publisher":"","title":"FRUS 1871, document 210: Gerolt’s retirement and Schlözer’s appointment","type":"Mission record","url":"https://history.state.gov/historicaldocuments/frus1871/d210"},{"accessedOn":"","date":"Accessed 26 October 2026","id":"mission-2403d1faa9fad56b36b8","locator":"","publisher":"","title":"Historical representation: Prussia","type":"Mission record","url":"https://www.bundestag.de/en/parliament/symbols/flag/flag-199494"},{"accessedOn":"","date":"Accessed 23 October 2026","id":"mission-83913b668e6ddcdcd669","locator":"","publisher":"","title":"U.S. Department of State, Office of the Historian: Germany recognition and diplomatic relations","type":"Mission record","url":"https://history.state.gov/countries/germany"}],"topics":["religious diplomacy","Kulturkampf","German Americans"]},"schemaVersion":1}
