He later studied at the Fletcher School, where he earned his doctorate, and entered Germany’s diplomatic service in 1976. His work included international law at the United Nations, the negotiations surrounding German unification, and the private offices of three NATO secretaries general.","Scharioth headed the Foreign Office’s political department and served as state secretary from 2002 to 2006 before becoming ambassador in Washington. His American posting lasted until 2011. He then returned to Fletcher as a teacher.","In Washington, Scharioth worked to open the International Tracing Service’s Holocaust archives at Bad Arolsen to survivors and researchers. In a January 2007 letter to members of Congress, he described faster access as a personal priority and set out Germany’s work with the State Department and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum on treaty ratification and digitization. He reported progress toward distributing digital copies among the member countries, while acknowledging that the legal process was still unfinished.","From 2011 to 2024, Scharioth led the Mercator Fellowship on International Affairs. He also chaired the advisory board of the German Turkish Youth Bridge, helping build exchanges between the two societies. He died on 30 October 2025. Colleagues at Fletcher and Mercator remembered his emphasis on careful listening, institutional responsibility, and candid but respectful debate."],"id":"germany:germany-klaus-scharioth","identifiers":{},"legacyPersonIds":[],"legacyUrl":"https://chanceries.org/diplomat-fb26859dac2a491c0604.html","name":"Klaus Scharioth","notes":[],"paragraphSources":[["scharioth-fletcher","scharioth-mercator"],["scharioth-fletcher","scharioth-mercator"],["scharioth-its-letter"],["scharioth-fletcher","scharioth-mercator"]],"profileUrl":"diplomat-fb26859dac2a491c0604.html","relatedEvents":[],"relatedPeople":[],"relationships":[],"researchStatus":"reviewed","reviewedOn":"2026-10-28","revision":"fa1b6928f4e6ceca","sources":[{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":null,"id":"scharioth-fletcher","locator":"Biographical remembrance","publisher":"Fletcher School, Tufts University","title":"Michael Glennon: Klaus Scharioth, A Remembrance","type":"contemporary-report","url":"https://fletcher.tufts.edu/news-media-mentions/all-news/klaus-scharioth-remembrance"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"2025-11-04","id":"scharioth-mercator","locator":"Press release, 4 November 2025","publisher":"Stiftung Mercator","title":"Klaus Scharioth: Mentor, Humanitarian and Diplomat has Passed Away","type":"contemporary-report","url":"https://www.stiftung-mercator.de/en/press_releases/klaus-scharioth-mentor-humanitarian-and-diplomat-has-passed-away/"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"2007-01-25","id":"scharioth-its-letter","locator":"Opening Up of the Bad Arolsen Holocaust Archives in Germany, hearing of 28 March 2007, printed pp. 48–49 (PDF pages 51–52)","publisher":"U.S. House of Representatives, Committee on Foreign Affairs","title":"Klaus Scharioth to Alcee Hastings and Robert Wexler, 25 January 2007","type":"primary-document","url":"https://www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/CHRG-110hhrg34481/pdf/CHRG-110hhrg34481.pdf"},{"accessedOn":"","date":"Accessed 23 October 2026","id":"mission-4004483e27002a3fc55a","locator":"Secondary year level roster; exact credentials and all temporary acting appointments not fully audited.","publisher":"","title":"Incoming German ambassadors to the United States: secondary chronology","type":"Mission record","url":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ambassadors_of_Germany_to_the_United_States"}],"topics":["German unification","NATO","international law","diplomatic education","Holocaust archives","International Tracing Service"]},"schemaVersion":1}
