At their first recorded interview in November 1817, Secretary of State John Quincy Adams questioned the combination of minister resident and consul general in Greuhm’s commission. Greuhm acknowledged the difficulty: diplomatic immunity could conflict with American courts’ authority over a consul engaged in commerce.","Greuhm had earlier worked in London, where he helped raise relief for soldiers wounded in the European wars. After an interruption in his American service, he returned to the United States and died at his Georgetown home on 1 December 1823. Senior government officers attended his funeral. The contemporary obituary praised his charitable work and his personal relations with Americans, while reporting a career of more than twenty years in diplomacy."],"id":"germany:germany-friedrich-von-greuhm","identifiers":{},"legacyPersonIds":[],"legacyUrl":"https://chanceries.org/diplomat-ad56ecb0db1b77685f55.html","name":"Friedrich von Greuhm","notes":[],"paragraphSources":[["greuhm-adams-1817"],["greuhm-obituary"]],"profileUrl":"diplomat-ad56ecb0db1b77685f55.html","relatedEvents":[],"relatedPeople":[],"relationships":[],"researchStatus":"reviewed","reviewedOn":"2026-10-28","revision":"81cf29defb9a7236","sources":[{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"1817-11-08","id":"greuhm-adams-1817","locator":"Entry on Greuhm’s first interview","publisher":"Massachusetts Historical Society / Primary Source Cooperative","title":"John Quincy Adams diary, 8 November 1817","type":"primary-record","url":"https://www.primarysourcecoop.org/publications/jqa/document/jqadiaries-v30-1817-11-p268--entry8?doci=undefined"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"1823-12","id":"greuhm-obituary","locator":"Transcribed obituary, funeral notice, and report","publisher":"Congressional Cemetery history collection","title":"The National Intelligencer, 3–5 December 1823: Frederick Greuhm","type":"contemporary-report","url":"https://bytesofhistory.com/Collections/FuneralsOfNote/Greuhm1823.html"},{"accessedOn":"","date":"Accessed 23 October 2026","id":"mission-4004483e27002a3fc55a","locator":"Secondary year level roster; exact credentials and all temporary acting appointments not fully audited.","publisher":"","title":"Incoming German ambassadors to the United States: secondary chronology","type":"Mission record","url":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ambassadors_of_Germany_to_the_United_States"},{"accessedOn":"","date":"Accessed 26 October 2026","id":"mission-2403d1faa9fad56b36b8","locator":"","publisher":"","title":"Historical representation: Prussia","type":"Mission record","url":"https://www.bundestag.de/en/parliament/symbols/flag/flag-199494"},{"accessedOn":"","date":"Accessed 23 October 2026","id":"mission-83913b668e6ddcdcd669","locator":"","publisher":"","title":"U.S. Department of State, Office of the Historian: Germany recognition and diplomatic relations","type":"Mission record","url":"https://history.state.gov/countries/germany"}],"topics":["diplomatic immunity","Prussia","charitable relief"]},"schemaVersion":1}
