His career combined embassy work in St Petersburg, Paris, and Constantinople with consular assignments in Belgrade and Alexandria. He later headed the missions in Bucharest, The Hague, and Stuttgart before becoming Germany's first ambassador to the United States in 1893.","Trade restrictions tested his Washington appointment. When Germany prohibited imports of American cattle in 1894, Saurma repeatedly discussed the dispute with Secretary of State Walter Gresham. His formal explanation maintained that the measure answered the discovery of Texas fever in cattle shipments and was not commercial retaliation. He also pointed to the United States' own strict sanitary regulations.","Saurma's correspondence included the limits of extradition. In 1894 he protested reports that an American returned from Prussia to face forgery charges had instead been convicted of embezzlement, an offense outside the grounds on which extradition had been granted. After Washington he served as ambassador in Constantinople and Rome, retired in 1899, and died in 1900."],"id":"germany:germany-anton-saurma-von-der-jeltsch","identifiers":{},"legacyPersonIds":[],"legacyUrl":"https://chanceries.org/diplomat-92d47805a4c0a2a9238e.html","name":"Anton Saurma von der Jeltsch","notes":[],"paragraphSources":[["saurma-bio","saurma-meyers"],["saurma-cattle"],["saurma-extradition","saurma-meyers"]],"profileUrl":"diplomat-92d47805a4c0a2a9238e.html","relatedEvents":[],"relatedPeople":[],"relationships":[],"researchStatus":"reviewed","reviewedOn":"2026-10-28","revision":"0b031c75f9699d77","sources":[{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":null,"id":"saurma-bio","locator":"Biography","publisher":"Wikipedia","title":"Anton Saurma von der Jeltsch","type":"reference","url":"https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anton_Saurma_von_der_Jeltsch"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":null,"id":"saurma-meyers","locator":"Meyers,1905–1909, biographical entry","publisher":"Meyers Großes Konversations-Lexikon, reproduced by Academic","title":"Saurma von der Jeltsch","type":"historical-reference","url":"https://meyers.de-academic.com/122892/Saurma"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"1894-10-31","id":"saurma-cattle","locator":"FRUS1894, document225, pp232–233","publisher":"U.S. Department of State, Office of the Historian","title":"Saurma to Gresham, 31 October 1894","type":"primary","url":"https://history.state.gov/historicaldocuments/frus1894/d225"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"1894-08-28","id":"saurma-extradition","locator":"FRUS1895, partI, document475, pp488–490","publisher":"U.S. Department of State, Office of the Historian","title":"Saurma to Gresham, 28 August 1894, enclosing note of 25 January 1894","type":"primary","url":"https://history.state.gov/historicaldocuments/frus1895p1/d475"},{"accessedOn":"","date":"Accessed 23 October 2026","id":"mission-4004483e27002a3fc55a","locator":"Secondary year level roster; exact credentials and all temporary acting appointments not fully audited.","publisher":"","title":"Incoming German ambassadors to the United States: secondary chronology","type":"Mission record","url":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ambassadors_of_Germany_to_the_United_States"},{"accessedOn":"","date":"Accessed 23 October 2026","id":"mission-1c0ba15f377bcb0c9689","locator":"","publisher":"","title":"FRUS 1894, Appendix I, document 731: Saurma on Samoa","type":"Mission record","url":"https://history.state.gov/historicaldocuments/frus1894app1/d731"},{"accessedOn":"","date":"Accessed 26 October 2026","id":"mission-2403d1faa9fad56b36b8","locator":"","publisher":"","title":"Historical representation: Prussia","type":"Mission record","url":"https://www.bundestag.de/en/parliament/symbols/flag/flag-199494"},{"accessedOn":"","date":"Accessed 23 October 2026","id":"mission-83913b668e6ddcdcd669","locator":"","publisher":"","title":"U.S. Department of State, Office of the Historian: Germany recognition and diplomatic relations","type":"Mission record","url":"https://history.state.gov/countries/germany"}],"topics":["German Empire","Ottoman Empire","embassy status"]},"schemaVersion":1}
