He worked in St. Petersburg, Peking, and The Hague before taking charge of Russian affairs in Berlin. As the Bolsheviks consolidated power, he advocated reopening practical relations, first over prisoners of war and then through trade.","Maltzan was a principal architect of the 1922 Treaty of Rapallo, which restored German and Soviet diplomatic relations and settled mutual financial claims. He became state secretary at the Foreign Ministry and subsequently ambassador in Washington. His American posting formed part of Germany’s effort to repair its position after the First World War. He died in an aircraft crash near Schleiz in September 1927; his Washington papers survive in the German Foreign Office’s Political Archive."],"id":"germany:germany-adolf-georg-von-maltzan","identifiers":{"gnd":"119062569"},"legacyPersonIds":[],"legacyUrl":"https://chanceries.org/diplomat-a051a68747616e033282.html","name":"Adolf Georg von Maltzan","notes":[],"paragraphSources":[["maltzan-ndb"],["maltzan-ndb","maltzan-archive"]],"profileUrl":"diplomat-a051a68747616e033282.html","relatedEvents":[],"relatedPeople":[],"relationships":[],"researchStatus":"reviewed","reviewedOn":"2026-10-28","revision":"39d22764a4a4d189","sources":[{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"1987","id":"maltzan-ndb","locator":"NDB 15, pp. 743–744, Winfried Baumgart","publisher":"Neue Deutsche Biographie / Bavarian Academy of Sciences","title":"Maltzan, Adolf Georg Otto (Ago) Freiherr von","type":"scholarship","url":"https://www.deutsche-biographie.de/sfz55937.html"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"2015-05-15","id":"maltzan-archive","locator":"Description of additions to Maltzan’s personal papers","publisher":"German Foreign Office Political Archive","title":"Zugänge und Neuverzeichnung des Nachlasses von Ago von Maltzan","type":"archive","url":"https://archiv.diplo.de/arc-de/aktuelles/zugaenge-und-neuverzeichnung-des-nachlasses-von-ago-von-maltzan-1602396"},{"accessedOn":"","date":"Accessed 23 October 2026","id":"mission-4004483e27002a3fc55a","locator":"Secondary year level roster; exact credentials and all temporary acting appointments not fully audited.","publisher":"","title":"Incoming German ambassadors to the United States: secondary chronology","type":"Mission record","url":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ambassadors_of_Germany_to_the_United_States"},{"accessedOn":"","date":"Accessed 23 October 2026","id":"mission-7f87d78cef617a55f049","locator":"","publisher":"","title":"FRUS 1925, Volume I, document 27: conversation with Maltzan","type":"Mission record","url":"https://history.state.gov/historicaldocuments/frus1925v01/d27"},{"accessedOn":"","date":"Accessed 26 October 2026","id":"mission-2403d1faa9fad56b36b8","locator":"","publisher":"","title":"Historical representation: Prussia","type":"Mission record","url":"https://www.bundestag.de/en/parliament/symbols/flag/flag-199494"},{"accessedOn":"","date":"Accessed 23 October 2026","id":"mission-83913b668e6ddcdcd669","locator":"","publisher":"","title":"U.S. Department of State, Office of the Historian: Germany recognition and diplomatic relations","type":"Mission record","url":"https://history.state.gov/countries/germany"}],"topics":["Rapallo","Soviet-German relations","economic diplomacy"]},"schemaVersion":1}
