Elected to the Chamber of Deputies in 1928, he worked on housing, transport, social insurance, and public works. He became mayor of Versailles and then a senator, and voted to grant full powers to Marshal Pétain on 10 July 1940.","Appointed to Washington that year, Henry-Haye represented the Vichy government. His earlier American experience and contacts helped explain the choice, but he remained loyal to Vichy rather than join the Free French. After diplomatic relations ended, he and members of the mission were confined in the United States before being exchanged and returned to Europe.","He reached France in March 1944 and later went into exile in South Africa. His account of the Washington mission, La grande éclipse franco-américaine, appeared in 1972. The Senate's biography characterizes it as a defence of his conduct."],"id":"france:gaston henry-haye","identifiers":{},"legacyPersonIds":[],"legacyUrl":"https://chanceries.org/diplomat-5c5e4d2b5e967658afbb.html","name":"Gaston Henry-Haye","notes":[],"paragraphSources":[["src-1b520ddf737a2aab"],["src-1b520ddf737a2aab"],["src-1b520ddf737a2aab"]],"profileUrl":"diplomat-5c5e4d2b5e967658afbb.html","relatedEvents":[],"relatedPeople":[],"relationships":[],"researchStatus":"reviewed","reviewedOn":"2026-10-28","revision":"8c4170ed4b1f1e31","sources":[{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":null,"id":"src-1b520ddf737a2aab","locator":"Biographies 1889–1940 and 1940–1958","publisher":"Sénat, Dictionnaire des parlementaires français","title":"Gaston Henry-Haye","type":"official-biography","url":"https://www.senat.fr/senateur-3eme-republique/henry_haye_gaston1642r3.html"},{"accessedOn":"","date":"2014-09-03; page report date; contains 2014-09-18 entry; accessed 20 October 2026","id":"mission-c0a410adaf2688f3b956","locator":"Complete published ambassador sequence from 1893 through Gérard Araud; separate Appt. and Amb.
