He studied in Vienna and Graz, fought on the Italian side in the First World War, and entered parliament in 1921. He subsequently held office in Mussolini’s government, becoming undersecretary for foreign affairs in 1932.","A central concern of his foreign policy work was keeping Austria independent of Nazi Germany. In memoranda to Mussolini, he warned that annexation would bring German power to Italy’s Alpine frontier and threaten Italian interests farther east. His arguments lost influence as Mussolini moved toward Berlin. Replaced at the ministry by Galeazzo Ciano in 1936, he accepted the Washington embassy.","Suvich’s American assignment included seeking financial support for an Italy strained by the Ethiopian war. According to the Foreign Ministry’s archival study, he established contacts with American financiers but failed to obtain the desired backing as Italian intervention in Spain damaged relations. In December 1937 he also pressed the State Department to complete an interim commercial agreement before the old treaty expired. He sought reassurance that Italian imports would retain favourable customs treatment while negotiators settled disagreements over exchange rates and trade rules.","After leaving Washington in 1938, Suvich returned to Trieste and worked with the Adriatica di Sicurtà insurance company. He lived until 1980."],"id":"italy:fulvio suvich","identifiers":{},"legacyPersonIds":[],"legacyUrl":"https://chanceries.org/diplomat-8e557f41ed5fad3667de.html","name":"Fulvio Suvich","notes":[],"paragraphSources":[["suvich-camera","suvich-archive"],["suvich-archive"],["suvich-archive","suvich-frus"],["suvich-archive","suvich-camera"]],"profileUrl":"diplomat-8e557f41ed5fad3667de.html","relatedEvents":[],"relatedPeople":[],"relationships":[],"researchStatus":"reviewed","reviewedOn":"2026-10-28","revision":"95f6d29e133e9b4a","sources":[{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"","id":"suvich-camera","locator":"Life dates, profession and parliamentary mandates","publisher":"Italian Chamber of Deputies, historical portal","title":"Fulvio Suvich","type":"official-biography","url":"https://storia.camera.it/deputato/fulvio-suvich-18870123"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"","id":"suvich-archive","locator":"Introductory study, especially printed pp. 404–417, PDF pp. 2–15","publisher":"Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Tomaso de Vergottini and Stefania Ruggeri","title":"Fulvio Suvich e la difesa dell’indipendenza austriaca; Carte Suvich","type":"scholarship","url":"https://www.esteri.it/mae/resource/doc/2015/11/Suvich.pdf"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"1937-12-14","id":"suvich-frus","locator":"FRUS 1937, volume II, document 366; pp. 488–489","publisher":"U.S. Department of State, Office of the Historian","title":"Memorandum of Conversation, by Mr. Melvin L.
