He subsequently worked on strategic affairs, advised Foreign Minister Alain Juppé, and joined President Jacques Chirac's diplomatic staff, where his responsibilities included European and transatlantic defence questions and the Bosnia crisis.","North America became the main setting of his later career. He directed press and communications at the Washington embassy from 1998 to 2002, served as consul general in New York and ambassador to Canada, and returned to Washington as ambassador in 2011. In a later interview he identified university partnerships as a priority of that mission, including stronger links between French institutions and North American campuses.","Delattre became France's UN ambassador in 2014. He described diplomacy there as coalition building as well as national representation, and recalled developing dialogue with institutional investors in support of climate action. In 2019 he returned to Paris as secretary-general of the foreign ministry after almost two decades of assignments in North America."],"id":"france:francois delattre","identifiers":{},"legacyPersonIds":[],"legacyUrl":"https://chanceries.org/diplomat-26df14826004959a29b5.html","name":"François Delattre","notes":[],"paragraphSources":[["src-6471871e41fdbd2a"],["src-6471871e41fdbd2a","src-a3f382dbae48cffd"],["src-a3f382dbae48cffd"]],"profileUrl":"diplomat-26df14826004959a29b5.html","relatedEvents":[],"relatedPeople":[],"relationships":[],"researchStatus":"reviewed","reviewedOn":"2026-10-28","revision":"18d46c446b60da6d","sources":[{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":null,"id":"src-6471871e41fdbd2a","locator":"Career through Canada appointment","publisher":"Conseil des relations internationales de Montréal","title":"François Delattre","type":"reference","url":"https://www.corim.qc.ca/en/biography/153/Francois_Delattre"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"2019-07-25","id":"src-a3f382dbae48cffd","locator":"June 2019 interview","publisher":"Sciences Po American Foundation","title":"François Delattre, art of diplomacy and memories from almost 20 years posted in North America","type":"primary-record","url":"https://www.sciencespo.fr/american-foundation/news/interview-francois-delattre-art-of-diplomacy-and-memories-from-almost-20-years-posted-in-north-america/"},{"accessedOn":"","date":"2014-09-03; page report date; contains 2014-09-18 entry; accessed 20 October 2026","id":"mission-c0a410adaf2688f3b956","locator":"Complete published ambassador sequence from 1893 through Gérard Araud; separate Appt. and Amb.
