His father was President Manuel Pardo y Lavalle, his brother José Pardo twice held the presidency, and his grandfather was the writer Felipe Pardo y Aliaga. After early service with José Antonio de Lavalle’s mission to Russia, he studied at San Marcos. His father’s assassination in 1878 interrupted those studies; he took responsibility for family business, including the Tumán sugar estate. He also fought in the defense of Lima in 1881.","In Washington, Pardo represented his brother’s government and then that of Augusto B. Leguía. He helped convey Peru's invitation to Secretary of State Elihu Root during Root's 1906 South American tour. On 5 December 1908, Pardo and Root signed a bilateral arbitration convention. It provided for referring unresolved legal and treaty interpretation disputes to the Permanent Court of Arbitration, subject to important exclusions and a separate agreement defining each case.","After Washington, Pardo received an assignment connected with the British coronation and later became minister in Argentina. He resigned the latter appointment in 1913. Following Leguía’s overthrow of his brother in 1919, he lived in Europe and eventually settled near Bayonne, France, where he died in August 1939."],"id":"peru:felipe pardo","identifiers":{},"legacyPersonIds":[],"legacyUrl":"https://chanceries.org/diplomat-3bf6231b55274330b6b4.html","name":"Felipe Pardo","notes":[],"paragraphSources":[["pardo-life"],["pardo-wright","pardo-arbitration"],["pardo-life"]],"profileUrl":"diplomat-3bf6231b55274330b6b4.html","relatedEvents":[],"relatedPeople":[],"relationships":[],"researchStatus":"reviewed","reviewedOn":"2026-10-28","revision":"b93ff2ffea549137","sources":[{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"","id":"pardo-life","locator":"Biografía","publisher":"Wikipedia, citing the Peruvian biographical tradition","title":"Felipe Pardo y Barreda","type":"reference","url":"https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Felipe_Pardo_y_Barreda"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"1908","id":"pardo-wright","locator":"Chapter on government, printed p. 166","publisher":"George Barrie & Sons; Project Gutenberg edition","title":"Marie Robinson Wright, The Old and the New Peru","type":"contemporary-report","url":"https://www.gutenberg.org/files/75033/75033-h/75033-h.htm"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"1908-12-05","id":"pardo-arbitration","locator":"1909 volume, document 466, articles I–IV and signatures","publisher":"U.S. Department of State, FRUS","title":"Arbitration convention between the United States and Peru","type":"primary-record","url":"https://history.state.gov/historicaldocuments/frus1909/d466"},{"accessedOn":"","date":"","id":"mission-7c6732d6b6a8cca83a5b","locator":"Indexed full text retrieved.
