His foreign service career included work at the United Nations, an ambassadorship in Austria, and service as foreign minister in 2011–2012. He came to Washington after representing Kazakhstan in the United Kingdom.","During his American posting, Kazykhanov promoted both commercial relations and discussion of Kazakhstan's international role. He publicly welcomed the U.S. Chamber of Commerce's creation of a U.S.-Kazakhstan Business Council in September 2020. The council absorbed the work of an earlier business association.","In February 2021, he participated in a George Washington University discussion marking thirty years of diplomatic relations. The embassy helped bring together former diplomats and nuclear security officials to examine the relationship's development. After Washington, he served as a presidential special envoy and foreign affairs adviser; in November 2025 he was appointed permanent representative to the United Nations offices and other international organizations in Geneva."],"id":"kazakhstan:erzhan kazykhanov","identifiers":{},"legacyPersonIds":[],"legacyUrl":"https://chanceries.org/diplomat-a430e79e9d6b7a7e8d03.html","name":"Erzhan Kazykhanov","notes":[],"paragraphSources":[["kazykhan-official","kazykhan-gwu"],["kazykhan-business"],["kazykhan-official","kazykhan-gwu"]],"profileUrl":"diplomat-a430e79e9d6b7a7e8d03.html","relatedEvents":[{"basis":"tenure-overlap","country":"Kazakhstan","date":"2018-01-16","description":"A White House summit launches an enhanced strategic partnership, broadening cooperation on regional security, nuclear nonproliferation, trade, and investment.","id":"kazakhstan-partnership","note":"Named people and the recorded mission tenure provide the connection; overlap does not establish personal participation.","sourceUrls":["https://trumpwhitehouse.archives.gov/briefings-statements/united-states-kazakhstan-enhanced-strategic-partnership-21st-century/"],"title":"A strategic partnership deepens","url":"Kazakhstan.html#history-kazakhstan-partnership"}],"relatedPeople":[],"relationships":[],"researchStatus":"reviewed","reviewedOn":"2026-10-28","revision":"4414df7497180a07","sources":[{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":null,"id":"kazykhan-official","locator":"Career chronology","publisher":"Permanent Mission of Kazakhstan in Geneva","title":"KAZYKHAN Erzhan","type":"official-biography","url":"https://www.gov.kz/org/mfa-geneva/about/structure/people/7531?lang=en"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"2021-02-11","id":"kazykhan-gwu","locator":"Event program and Kazykhanov biography","publisher":"George Washington University, Central Asia Program","title":"30th Anniversary of US-Kazakh Diplomatic Relations (Video)","type":"primary-record","url":"https://centralasiaprogram.org/event-summary/30th-anniversary-of-us-kazakh-diplomatic-relations-video/"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"2020-09-01","id":"kazykhan-business","locator":"Announcement and ambassador's statement","publisher":"U.S. Chamber of Commerce","title":"U.S. Chamber of Commerce Launches U.S.-Kazakhstan Business Council","type":"primary-record","url":"https://www.uschamber.com/international/us-chamber-of-commerce-launches-us-kazakhstan-business-council"},{"accessedOn":"","date":"2021-04-05","id":"mission-9eb13582f4205f08b02f","locator":"","publisher":"","title":"On the appointment of Erzhan Kazykhanov","type":"Mission record","url":"https://akorda.kz/en/on-the-appointment-of-erzhan-kazykhanov-534023"},{"accessedOn":"","date":"","id":"mission-d3b6604848796ad1ffa1","locator":"Joint statement from Nazarbayev’s Washington visit during this posting.","publisher":"","title":"United States and Kazakhstan: an enhanced strategic partnership, January 2018","type":"Mission record","url":"https://trumpwhitehouse.archives.gov/briefings-statements/united-states-kazakhstan-enhanced-strategic-partnership-21st-century/"}],"topics":["economic diplomacy","United Nations","nuclear-security dialogue"]},"schemaVersion":1}
