Naturalized as an Italian, he entered the foreign ministry in 1875 and worked closely with Francesco Crispi, accompanying him on visits to European leaders. His proposed transfer to Berlin in 1894 was withdrawn after objections to his French and Jewish origins. He subsequently served in Bern and Belgrade before presenting his credentials in Washington in November 1901.","In the United States, Mayor promoted agricultural settlement as an alternative to the crowded urban districts where many Italian migrants lived. His 1905 tour of the South explored opportunities for Italian farmers and brought him into contact with American landowners, railway interests, and officials. Their objectives did not always coincide: Italy hoped to maintain emigrants’ national attachments, while American promoters sought settlers and labor. He also objected to the American practice of classifying northern and southern Italians as separate races.","He supported Italian participation in the 1904 St. Louis exposition and later published a book about Italian emigration to the United States. After Washington, he briefly headed the embassy in Constantinople before retiring in 1911. Wartime shortages brought him back into government service in 1916 as a London commissioner responsible for obtaining coal, food, and other supplies.","Appointed a senator in 1917, Mayor became commissioner general for emigration the following year and represented Italy at international labor meetings. He died in Rome in December 1920."],"id":"italy:edmondo mayor des planches","identifiers":{},"legacyPersonIds":[],"legacyUrl":"https://chanceries.org/diplomat-99c6fa5d02c341a56036.html","name":"Edmondo Mayor des Planches","notes":[],"paragraphSources":[["mayor-dbi"],["mayor-agriculture"],["mayor-dbi"],["mayor-dbi"]],"profileUrl":"diplomat-99c6fa5d02c341a56036.html","relatedEvents":[],"relatedPeople":[],"relationships":[],"researchStatus":"reviewed","reviewedOn":"2026-10-28","revision":"5df9ea023e0579e5","sources":[{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"","id":"mayor-dbi","locator":"Complete biographical entry","publisher":"Dizionario Biografico degli Italiani, vol. 72 (2008)","title":"Marta Petricioli, Mayor Des Planches, Edmondo","type":"scholarship","url":"https://www.treccani.it/enciclopedia/mayor-des-planches-edmondo_(Dizionario-Biografico)/"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"","id":"mayor-agriculture","locator":"Full article, discussion of Mayor’s agricultural diplomacy and 1905 southern tour","publisher":"Modern Italy / Cambridge University Press","title":"Italianness in the United States between migrants’ informal gardening practices and agricultural diplomacy (1880–1912)","type":"scholarship","url":"https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/modern-italy/article/italianness-in-the-united-states-between-migrants-informal-gardening-practices-and-agricultural-diplomacy-18801912/5029ADA2BD827F328736DBED5CE990A4"},{"accessedOn":"","date":"","id":"mission-7fc24eb1e3731ae8a3ae","locator":"","publisher":"","title":"Previous Italian ambassadors","type":"Mission record","url":"https://ambwashingtondc.esteri.it/en/chi-siamo/lambasciatore/ambasciatori-precedenti/"},{"accessedOn":"","date":"Accessed 26 October 2026","id":"mission-67e5252c04637df36483","locator":"","publisher":"","title":"Historical representation: Kingdom of Italy","type":"Mission record","url":"https://www.quirinale.it/it/pagine/italian-tricolour-flag"}],"topics":["Italian emigration","agricultural settlement","labor diplomacy","First World War"]},"schemaVersion":1}
