His career combined Korean diplomacy with international organizations. He helped administer the Korean Peninsula Energy Development Organization in 1995–1997, served as a UN assistant secretary-general for peacekeeping, and subsequently became ambassador in Vienna, vice foreign minister, and Korea's permanent representative to the United Nations.","From 2007 to 2011 Choi headed the UN operation in Côte d'Ivoire. His certification of the 2010 presidential election became central to the dispute between Alassane Ouattara and incumbent Laurent Gbagbo. Contemporary reporting recorded both the UN's recognition of Ouattara and objections to Choi's certification mandate.","As ambassador to the United States in 2012–2013, Choi spoke about Korea's emergence as a democratic, industrial, and cultural partner. In an April 2013 Denver dialogue with former American ambassador Thomas Hubbard, he connected the alliance's sixtieth anniversary with trade and Korea's wider international responsibilities. After diplomatic service he taught comparative Eastern and Western civilizations at Yonsei through 2018 and published a trilogy on their underlying cultural philosophies."],"id":"korea:choi young-jin","identifiers":{},"legacyPersonIds":[],"legacyUrl":"https://chanceries.org/diplomat-0da6bbcc0af64eecce58.html","name":"Choi Young-jin","notes":[],"paragraphSources":[["career"],["career","ivory-coast"],["career","denver"]],"profileUrl":"diplomat-0da6bbcc0af64eecce58.html","relatedEvents":[],"relatedPeople":[],"relationships":[],"researchStatus":"reviewed","reviewedOn":"2026-10-28","revision":"a2e181a0da9a5603","sources":[{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"2019","id":"career","locator":"Speaker biography","publisher":"Jeju Forum","title":"CHOI Young-Jin","type":"official-biography","url":"https://www.jejuforum.or.kr/en/m24_view.php?idx=1279&year=2019"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"2011-01-18","id":"ivory-coast","locator":"Final paragraphs on UN certification","publisher":"Inter Press Service, reproduced by Global Issues","title":"Pressure Builds to End Stalemate in Cote d'Ivoire","type":"contemporary-report","url":"https://www.globalissues.org/amp/news/2011/01/18/8215"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"2013-04-18","id":"denver","locator":"Choi opening remarks and dialogue","publisher":"The Korea Society","title":"Korea-U.S. Relations: From Allies to Global Partners with Ambassador YJ Choi & Ambassador Hubbard","type":"primary-record","url":"https://koreasociety.org/oldjoomla5.x/index.php/policy-and-corporate-programs/445-korea-us-relations"},{"accessedOn":"","date":"Undated; lists Kang Kyung-wha as incumbent from October 2025","id":"mission-5a99a134f5cacf2c3bad","locator":"","publisher":"","title":"Mission history, former chiefs and jurisdiction","type":"Mission record","url":"https://www.mofa.go.kr/us-ko/wpge/m_4472/contents.do"},{"accessedOn":"","date":"","id":"mission-a5e8dcb6e8650cf4b840","locator":"","publisher":"","title":"United Nations: briefing by Choi Young-jin on the Côte d’Ivoire post-election crisis, 18 January 2011","type":"Mission record","url":"https://press.un.org/en/2011/110118_choi.doc.htm"}],"topics":["peacekeeping","Côte d'Ivoire election","KEDO","comparative civilizations"]},"schemaVersion":1}
