He studied at the Universidad Nacional de San Agustín and taught both there and at San Marcos in Lima. European study preceded his return to Peru in 1916. His later diplomatic career included appointments in Scandinavia and Bolivia, while his domestic offices included the second vice-presidency under Manuel Prado from 1939 to 1945.","His short Washington leadership came during the political rupture of 1919. On 26 July, as chargé d’affaires, Gibson transmitted the new foreign minister’s explanation of Augusto B. Leguía’s seizure of power and José Pardo’s removal. The note presented the change as a popular and military movement intended to protect Leguía’s electoral victory.","San Agustín lists him as rector from 1939, and its accounting faculty traces its origins to the Institute of Banking and Commerce created on his initiative in August 1942. That institute subsequently became a professional school and then a faculty."],"id":"peru:carlos gibson","identifiers":{},"legacyPersonIds":[],"legacyUrl":"https://chanceries.org/diplomat-c9ed3ed20da0ee9f4146.html","name":"Carlos Gibson","notes":[],"paragraphSources":[["gibson-life"],["gibson-coup"],["gibson-rectors","gibson-institute"]],"profileUrl":"diplomat-c9ed3ed20da0ee9f4146.html","relatedEvents":[],"relatedPeople":[],"relationships":[],"researchStatus":"reviewed","reviewedOn":"2026-10-28","revision":"e54ddda0a753990b","sources":[{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"","id":"gibson-life","locator":"Biografía","publisher":"Wikipedia, citing Alberto Tauro del Pino and Adela Pardo Gámez de Belaunde","title":"Carlos Gibson","type":"reference","url":"https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carlos_Gibson"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"1919-07-26","id":"gibson-coup","locator":"1919, vol.
