His postings included Constantinople, German courts, Stockholm, and Japan before Washington.","In Japan in 1873, Litta handled the visit of Prince Tommaso of Savoy-Genoa. A letter by naval officer Camillo Candiani describes how delayed instructions from Rome left the acting diplomat to arrange the visit as an official court occasion, although the voyage had originally been intended for the prince’s training.","In Washington, Litta investigated the case of Largomarsino, an Italian born man claiming American citizenship who had been required to serve in the Italian army after returning to Italy. An American dispatch of August 1877 records Litta’s earlier inquiry to Rome and the information it produced.","Litta also helped publicize the 1878 International Congress of Orientalists in Florence, asking the State Department in May 1877 to circulate its scholarly prize announcement. He died while still in service in New York in March 1880."],"id":"italy:balzarino litta biumi resta","identifiers":{},"legacyPersonIds":[],"legacyUrl":"https://chanceries.org/diplomat-96f57a4acf6aa4dac3b7.html","name":"Balzarino Litta Biumi Resta","notes":[],"paragraphSources":[["litta-archive"],["litta-japan"],["litta-nationality"],["litta-orientalists","litta-archive"]],"profileUrl":"diplomat-96f57a4acf6aa4dac3b7.html","relatedEvents":[],"relatedPeople":[],"relationships":[],"researchStatus":"reviewed","reviewedOn":"2026-10-28","revision":"cc56c3aeb5df0f49","sources":[{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"","id":"litta-archive","locator":"p. 47, note 119; PDF p. 67; personnel chronology","publisher":"Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Historical Archives","title":"Ambasciata Washington 1848–1901: historical introduction and inventory","type":"archive","url":"https://www.esteri.it/mae/Servizi/ArchivioStorico/11Washington.pdf"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"","id":"litta-japan","locator":"Sections on the 1873 voyage and delayed instructions to Litta; quoted family letter","publisher":"Rivista Savej (November 13, 2019)","title":"Giovanni Riccardi Candiani, Le lettere dal Giappone di Camillo Candiani","type":"scholarship","url":"https://rivistasavej.it/lung/2016-2020/le-lettere-dal-giappone-di-camillo-candiani-abc123a68b4f"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"","id":"litta-nationality","locator":"FRUS 1878, document 284, printed no. 279","publisher":"U.S. Department of State, Foreign Relations of the United States","title":"Mr. Wurts to Mr. Evarts, August 7, 1877","type":"primary-record","url":"https://history.state.gov/historicaldocuments/frus1878/d284"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"","id":"litta-orientalists","locator":"FRUS 1877, document 180 and enclosure","publisher":"U.S. Department of State, Foreign Relations of the United States","title":"Count Litta to Mr. Evarts, May 21, 1877","type":"primary-record","url":"https://history.state.gov/historicaldocuments/frus1877/d180"},{"accessedOn":"","date":"Accessed 26 October 2026","id":"mission-67e5252c04637df36483","locator":"","publisher":"","title":"Historical representation: Kingdom of Italy","type":"Mission record","url":"https://www.quirinale.it/it/pagine/italian-tricolour-flag"}],"topics":["nationality","military service","Japan","scholarly exchanges"]},"schemaVersion":1}
