His early work included vice-consulships in Rouen and New York. He became second secretary in the Swedish foreign ministry in 1905, legation secretary in Washington in 1906, counsellor in 1910, and envoy in 1912.","The First World War added a protecting power role to his Swedish duties. On 10 April 1917, Ekengren formally notified the State Department that Sweden had instructed him to assume responsibility for Austro-Hungarian interests in the United States.","The work included requests from American residents wishing to help relatives in Austria-Hungary. A November 1917 letter from the legation, signed on the minister's behalf by Patrik Reuterswärd, explained that it accepted deposits and sought corresponding aid from Austro-Hungarian authorities rather than transmitting money directly. It requested American permission to continue under wartime restrictions. Ekengren remained envoy until his death in Washington in November 1920."],"id":"sweden:august-ekengren","identifiers":{},"legacyPersonIds":[],"legacyUrl":"https://chanceries.org/diplomat-925ea63affc07c6a0b88.html","name":"August Ekengren","notes":[],"paragraphSources":[["src-d4ba7ba0f0a457a4"],["src-ac31a3fce3113250"],["src-be8a09ff5308337b","src-d4ba7ba0f0a457a4","src-4f0dbef09c036de5"]],"profileUrl":"diplomat-925ea63affc07c6a0b88.html","relatedEvents":[],"relatedPeople":[],"relationships":[],"researchStatus":"reviewed","reviewedOn":"2026-10-28","revision":"146a29ce784db99f","sources":[{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":null,"id":"src-d4ba7ba0f0a457a4","locator":"Named individual entry","publisher":"Project Runeberg","title":"49 (Almanack för alla / 1922)","type":"reference","url":"https://runeberg.org/afa/1922/0059.html"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"1917-04-10","id":"src-ac31a3fce3113250","locator":"FRUS 1917 Supplement 1, volume 1, document 867","publisher":"US Department of State, Office of the Historian","title":"The Swedish Minister (Ekengren) to the Secretary of State","type":"primary-record","url":"https://history.state.gov/historicaldocuments/frus1917Supp01v01/d867"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"1917-11-05","id":"src-be8a09ff5308337b","locator":"FRUS 1918 Supplement 2, document 490; signed for the minister by Patrik Reuterswärd","publisher":"US Department of State, Office of the Historian","title":"The Swedish Minister (Ekengren) to the Secretary of State","type":"primary-record","url":"https://history.state.gov/historicaldocuments/frus1918Supp02/d490"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":null,"id":"src-4f0dbef09c036de5","locator":"Biographical entry and references; exact funeral chronology not used","publisher":"Wikipedia","title":"August Ekengren","type":"reference","url":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/August_Ekengren"},{"accessedOn":"","date":"Accessed 25 October 2026","id":"mission-103b3e7eae0dda0bc833","locator":"Secondary cross-check of incoming ministers, chargés and ambassadors.
