His career combined European integration with economic diplomacy: he served in Budapest, at the European Commission in Brussels, and in the Italian prime minister’s office. After advising the European Commission president on international affairs and summit diplomacy, he headed the commercial section of Italy’s Washington embassy from 2002.","He later advised the Italian president, served as ambassador in Belgrade, and returned to the prime minister’s office before becoming ambassador to the United States in 2016. During the COVID-19 emergency, his embassy and the consular network assisted Italians trying to return home. In a May 2020 public discussion, Varricchio described that work and credited the continued New York–Rome air connection with enabling thousands of returns. He also promoted scientific cooperation and economic recovery as parts of the bilateral response.","On 8 June 2020 he met remotely with Export-Import Bank chair Kimberly Reed to discuss the pandemic’s economic effects, relief measures, and the United States’ assistance memorandum for Italy. After leaving Washington in 2021 he became ambassador in Berlin.
