He trained at the University of Buenos Aires and studied economics in Berne, later teaching political economy and Argentine economic policy. A member of a Swiss-Argentine publishing family, he directed Argentinisches Tageblatt, a newspaper in German, and wrote books on economic systems, investment, and Argentina's economic history.","Alemann first became economy minister under Arturo Frondizi in 1961. His program emphasized restraint in public spending and a greater role for private enterprise. After leaving the ministry, he served as ambassador in Washington from 1962 to 1964. In July 1962 he accompanied Economy Minister Álvaro Alsogaray to John Kennedy for discussions of debt, recovery, and the political transition after Frondizi's overthrow. Kennedy cautioned that economic policy also had to respond visibly to ordinary people's needs, rather than appearing to serve only bankers and privileged groups.","His second period as economy minister began under General Leopoldo Galtieri in December 1981. The Falklands/Malvinas War disrupted his intended stabilization program. According to his obituary, he had not been consulted before the landing but remained in office during the conflict. He left government after the military defeat and returned to private economic work, teaching, and writing. Alemann received the Konex award for economic policy in 1986 and died in 2020."],"id":"argentina:argentina-roberto-alemann","identifiers":{},"legacyPersonIds":[],"legacyUrl":"https://chanceries.org/diplomat-55d6879500d193925b56.html","name":"Roberto Alemann","notes":[],"paragraphSources":[["alemann-konex"],["alemann-obituary","alemann-kennedy"],["alemann-obituary","alemann-konex"]],"profileUrl":"diplomat-55d6879500d193925b56.html","relatedEvents":[],"relatedPeople":[],"relationships":[],"researchStatus":"reviewed","reviewedOn":"2026-10-28","revision":"b0906b730a3d123f","sources":[{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":null,"id":"alemann-konex","locator":"Award biography","publisher":"Fundación Konex","title":"Roberto Alemann","type":"official-biography","url":"https://www.fundacionkonex.org/b504-roberto-alemann"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"2020-03-28","id":"alemann-obituary","locator":"Obituary, 28 March 2020","publisher":"La Nación; Fernando Laborda","title":"Roberto Alemann y su obsesión incumplida","type":"contemporary-report","url":"https://www.lanacion.com.ar/economia/roberto-alemann-su-obsesion-incumplida-nid2348418/"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":null,"id":"alemann-kennedy","locator":"27 July 1962","publisher":"U.S. Department of State, Office of the Historian","title":"Memorandum of Conversation: Minister Alsogaray's Appointment with President Kennedy","type":"primary-record","url":"https://history.state.gov/historicaldocuments/frus1961-63v12/d191"},{"accessedOn":"","date":"","id":"mission-37d73da851637feedd00","locator":"","publisher":"","title":"State Department historical roster — access blocked","type":"Mission record","url":"https://2009-2017.state.gov/s/cpr/rls/91554.htm"},{"accessedOn":"","date":"","id":"mission-3be3a949e4127a81fbf2","locator":"","publisher":"","title":"Secondary historical roster — verification incomplete","type":"Mission record","url":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ambassadors_of_Argentina_to_the_United_States"}],"topics":["economic policy","journalism","development finance","Falklands/Malvinas War"]},"schemaVersion":1}
