He edited La Tarde, which initially supported the military government. His father's abduction in 1977 and the family's experience of repression preceded his own exile in the United States. In New York he earned a master's degree in international affairs at Columbia in 1981 and became active in human rights organizations, including Americas Watch and the movement that developed into Human Rights Watch.","Timerman's journalism continued in Argentine and American newspapers, magazines, radio, and television. He served as consul general in New York from 2004 before being appointed ambassador to the United States in December 2007. At the embassy he confronted lobbying by holders of defaulted Argentine bonds. In a later speech, he described briefing members of Congress on the consequences of the 2001 crisis and Argentina's 2005 debt exchange, seeking to counter efforts to link payment demands to sanctions against Argentina. His public diplomacy also included human rights lectures and the promotion of historical memory.","As foreign minister from 2010 to 2015, Timerman pursued debt diplomacy, regional political mediation, and human rights initiatives. The foreign ministry's retrospective credits his administration with supporting the UN mandate on truth, justice, and reparation, negotiating the Inter-American Convention on the Rights of Older Persons, and arranging exchanges of records on past human rights violations with neighboring countries.","His 2013 memorandum with Iran concerning the AMIA bombing became the central controversy of his later career. Prosecutors alleged that it helped conceal responsibility for the attack; Timerman denied a cover-up and maintained that the agreement sought to advance the investigation. The proposed truth commission never operated after Argentine courts rejected the arrangement. He was detained in 2017, later obtained release for cancer treatment, and died on December 30, 2018, while the prosecution remained unresolved."],"id":"argentina:argentina-hector-timerman","identifiers":{},"legacyPersonIds":[],"legacyUrl":"https://chanceries.org/diplomat-b5a6f0572115eee9257e.html","name":"Héctor Timerman","notes":[],"paragraphSources":[["obit","utep"],["utep","speech"],["memorial"],["obit"]],"profileUrl":"diplomat-b5a6f0572115eee9257e.html","relatedEvents":[],"relatedPeople":[],"relationships":[],"researchStatus":"reviewed","reviewedOn":"2026-10-28","revision":"016ff6774485c40b","sources":[{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":null,"id":"utep","locator":"August 27, 2009 lecture announcement and biographical profile","publisher":"University of Texas at El Paso","title":"The Disappeared: Ambassador Héctor Marcos Timerman","type":"official-biography","url":"https://www.utep.edu/bulletins/ambassadortimerman.html"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":null,"id":"obit","locator":"James Grainger, December 30, 2018","publisher":"Buenos Aires Times","title":"Ex-Foreign Minister Héctor Timerman dies aged 65","type":"contemporary-report","url":"https://www.batimes.com.ar/news/argentina/ex-foreign-minister-hector-timerman-dies-aged-65.phtml"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":null,"id":"speech","locator":"Concluding section beginning 'Apenas asumido como Embajador en Washington'","publisher":"Argentine Ministry of Foreign Affairs","title":"Héctor Marcos Timerman: address on foreign policy and debt","type":"primary-record","url":"https://cancilleria.gob.ar/es/actualidad/discursos/hector-marcos-timerman-19"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":null,"id":"memorial","locator":"February 16, 2022, final three substantive paragraphs","publisher":"Argentine Ministry of Foreign Affairs","title":"La Cancillería argentina homenajeó a Héctor Timerman","type":"institutional-history","url":"https://www.cancilleria.gob.ar/es/actualidad/noticias/la-cancilleria-argentina-homenajeo-hector-timerman"},{"accessedOn":"","date":"","id":"mission-37d73da851637feedd00","locator":"","publisher":"","title":"State Department historical roster — access blocked","type":"Mission record","url":"https://2009-2017.state.gov/s/cpr/rls/91554.htm"},{"accessedOn":"","date":"","id":"mission-3be3a949e4127a81fbf2","locator":"","publisher":"","title":"Secondary historical roster — verification incomplete","type":"Mission record","url":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ambassadors_of_Argentina_to_the_United_States"},{"accessedOn":"","date":"","id":"mission-bbe3efb213f05e7cfc24","locator":"","publisher":"","title":"Argentine Foreign Ministry: Héctor Timerman biography","type":"Mission record","url":"https://cancilleria.gob.ar/es/actualidad/comunicados/curriculum-del-canciller-hector-timerman-y-del-secretario-de-relaciones"}],"topics":["journalism","human rights","sovereign debt","AMIA investigation"]},"schemaVersion":1}
