Born in Montevideo in 1845 during his parents' exile, he later studied law in Buenos Aires. He entered diplomatic work as a young man in Domingo Faustino Sarmiento's American legation, a posting that also supplied material for his writing.","From the United States he contributed reports and translations to the Buenos Aires weekly Correo del Domingo, including American demographic information and the novel Oakland o Las guerrillas del Shenandoah. He also took charge of the legation during Sarmiento’s absences. On 9 July 1867, acting on his government’s instructions, he rejected American mediation in the Paraguayan War and challenged the conduct of U.S. diplomats in the Río de la Plata. Sarmiento again named him chargé ad interim in a letter to William Seward on 8 July 1868, before leaving for Argentina.","Mitre y Vedia later became an editor of La Nación, directing the newspaper between 1882 and 1893 in alternation with his brother Emilio. His work ranged from political journalism to comic sketches and translations; he used the names Argos and Claudio Caballero and wrote the column A la pesca de noticias. He died in April 1900. A posthumous collection, Páginas serias y humorísticas, appeared the following year."],"id":"argentina:argentina-bartolome-mitre-vedia","identifiers":{},"legacyPersonIds":[],"legacyUrl":"https://chanceries.org/diplomat-b24334f7045cff4e8643.html","name":"Bartolomé Mitre y Vedia","notes":[],"paragraphSources":[["mitre-nacion"],["mitre-martin","mitre-dugini","mitre-mediation","mitre-rank"],["mitre-nacion"]],"profileUrl":"diplomat-b24334f7045cff4e8643.html","relatedEvents":[],"relatedPeople":[{"certainty":"documented","name":"Domingo Faustino Sarmiento","note":"Secretary to Sarmiento, then designated chargé d'affaires ad interim in his July1868 departure letter.","profileUrl":"diplomat-b1779af0d5b788200109.html","sourceIds":["mitre-dugini"],"targetId":"argentina:argentina-domingo-faustino-sarmiento","type":"collaboration"}],"relationships":[{"certainty":"documented","note":"Secretary to Sarmiento, then designated chargé d'affaires ad interim in his July1868 departure letter.","sourceIds":["mitre-dugini"],"targetId":"argentina:argentina-domingo-faustino-sarmiento","type":"collaboration"}],"researchStatus":"reviewed","reviewedOn":"2026-10-29","revision":"31299728e1784e1f","sources":[{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"2000-04-20","id":"mitre-nacion","locator":"Full biographical article","publisher":"La Nación","title":"Hace cien años moría Bartolomé Mitre y Vedia","type":"institutional-history","url":"https://www.lanacion.com.ar/sociedad/hace-cien-anos-moria-bartolome-mitre-y-vedia-nid13760/"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"2026-05-01","id":"mitre-martin","locator":"Opening discussion of Bartolito and his translations","publisher":"Orbis Tertius, Universidad Nacional de La Plata; Manuel Martín","title":"América como Norte.
