He also briefly took responsibility for Guatemala’s legation.","In Washington, Rivero handled the diplomatic consequences of the August 1912 assault on the American chargé d’affaires in Havana. He expressed regret, reported that Cuban prosecutors had been instructed to bring the attacker to trial, and emphasized that Cuba’s secretary of state had personally visited the American legation to offer satisfaction.","Rivero headed Cuba’s special mission to Wilson’s 1913 inauguration; Pablo Desvernine, a fellow member of that mission, subsequently replaced him as minister. Rivero returned to Mexico in 1920. His letter of credence used the fuller name Antonio Martín Rivero y Aguiar.","In 1909 Rivero was elected to Mexico’s Society of Geography and Statistics. He proposed a study linking cycles of solar activity to political upheaval."],"id":"cuba:antonio martin-rivero","identifiers":{},"legacyPersonIds":[],"legacyUrl":"https://chanceries.org/diplomat-9a50efdd5e003b0efe3b.html","name":"Antonio Martín-Rivero","notes":[],"paragraphSources":[["ortega2009"],["rivero-gibson"],["rivero-inauguration","ortega2009","rivero-dof"],["rivero-science"]],"profileUrl":"diplomat-9a50efdd5e003b0efe3b.html","relatedEvents":[],"relatedPeople":[{"certainty":"documented","name":"Carlos García Vélez","note":"Served as secretary and acting chief in García Vélez’s Mexican legation.","profileUrl":"diplomat-cf06ce392058aaefe590.html","sourceIds":["ortega2009"],"targetId":"cuba:carlos garcia velez","type":"worked_under"},{"certainty":"documented","name":"Pablo Desvernine","note":"Led the Cuban special mission to Wilson’s inauguration, with Desvernine as a member.","profileUrl":"diplomat-92b248bcd4382f868922.html","sourceIds":["rivero-inauguration"],"targetId":"cuba:pablo desvernine","type":"worked_with"}],"relationships":[{"certainty":"documented","note":"Served as secretary and acting chief in García Vélez’s Mexican legation.","sourceIds":["ortega2009"],"targetId":"cuba:carlos garcia velez","type":"worked_under"},{"certainty":"documented","note":"Led the Cuban special mission to Wilson’s inauguration, with Desvernine as a member.","sourceIds":["rivero-inauguration"],"targetId":"cuba:pablo desvernine","type":"worked_with"}],"researchStatus":"limited","reviewedOn":"2026-10-28","revision":"76e82f9e610b5b78","sources":[{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"2009","id":"ortega2009","locator":"PDF pp.48–49,113–127","publisher":"Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México","title":"Jaime Ortega Reyna, Las relaciones diplomáticas entre México y Cuba: un acercamiento desde la figura de Carlos García Vélez","type":"scholarship","url":"https://tesiunamdocumentos.dgb.unam.mx/ptd2009/marzo/0641337/0641337_A1.pdf"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":null,"id":"rivero-gibson","locator":"pp.272–273","publisher":"U.S. Department of State, Office of the Historian","title":"Antonio Martín Rivero to the acting secretary of state, 31 August 1912","type":"primary-record","url":"https://history.state.gov/historicaldocuments/frus1912/d393"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":null,"id":"rivero-inauguration","locator":"May20 dinner account","publisher":"U.S. Department of State, Office of the Historian","title":"Report of the secretary of the special mission to Cuba, 1913","type":"primary-record","url":"https://history.state.gov/historicaldocuments/frus1913/d260"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"1925-02-18","id":"rivero-dof","locator":"18February1925 issue index","publisher":"Diario Oficial de la Federación","title":"Letter accrediting Antonio Martín Rivero y Aguiar","type":"official-record","url":"https://dof.gob.mx/index_113.php?day=18&month=02&year=1925"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"2009-10-26","id":"rivero-science","locator":"Complete reprinted item","publisher":"La Jornada","title":"Centenaria: El Diario, 26 October 1909","type":"historical-newspaper-reprint","url":"https://www.jornada.com.mx/2009/10/26/opinion/037o1cap"},{"accessedOn":"","date":"2015-09-16 (page date; table includes 17 September)","id":"mission-3c90b64cdbf56789616d","locator":"","publisher":"","title":"Diplomatic Representation for the Republic of Cuba","type":"Mission record","url":"https://2009-2017.state.gov/s/cpr/rls/91599.htm"},{"accessedOn":"","date":"","id":"mission-2041e6f359674d40dff4","locator":"","publisher":"","title":"Antonio Martín-Rivero — mission record (1911–1913)","type":"Mission record","url":"https://archive.org/stream/cubareview11muns/cubareview11muns_djvu.txt"}],"topics":["Mexico","consular protection","history of science"]},"schemaVersion":1}
